@LindsayInNY: Let me wall you some of the organization stuff we did... we have a bigger space, but some of it was remotely clever.

@LBee: We have the large Ikea Hemnes dresser right now - 4 large drawers and 4 small ones. I'm hoping to get to the point where I'm only using 2 of the large drawers for DH and my "stuff" (extra toiletry stuff, toilet paper, etc.). I'm trying to sell my wedding dress or somehow get rid of it before June so we'll see... Luckily I don't need to stock up on diapers/wipes and can just order from Amazon or Diapers.com whenever we're low, so that helps with the storage issue. I was thinking one of the smaller dresser drawers for current diapers, a basket on top of the dresser for changing "stuff." I can't imagine needing to hang a ton of clothes early on. But, like you mentioned, I don't want to forget about things either. Maybe a hanging shoe or sweater organizer would work in the closet too? MIL is going to make a crib skirt so I would like to move some of the closet crap under the crib (basically framed things that aren't hung but can't be gotten rid of). Man this seems so overwhelming, LOL!

@LindsayInNY: We do tons of baskets for onesies and store a whole lot in his dresser. If I had a small closet, I would only hang the clothes he's currently in and have labeled baskets for the next sizes. The problem with that would be, though, that he might outgrow stuff that's up in the basket and you not notice. We have 2 levels of shelves above my son's closet right now (it's fairly big) and we store all kinds of crap up there.

When they preserved my wedding dress I got it back in a box. It's now shoved underneath our bed. Sentimental, I know.

Oh! Another idea would be getting a crib skirt and storing stuff under your future LO's bed too.

@LBee: Awesome, thank you!! I've considered that. The closet that would be LO's (there are two in the room, one isn't the most accessible with the radiator so it's more storage) has a ton of storage space at the top. We're going to try and make better use of that. And then figure out how to work around what's currently in there since DH and I have clothes in there, cleaning stuff, my wedding dress (ugh)... I think a double rod would definitely help with extra space once I clear out some of the floor stuff!

@LindsayInNY: I think either RunnerD (now deactivated, but search her nursery threads) or LittleBit did an awesome Home Depot closet organization system. Have you thought about a double rack?

ETA: Found it! http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/july-2014-nurseries#post-1549043 - only $50 and free shipping! I think LittleBit did it too, based on their interaction on the thread. (as an aside, I'm super impressed with my memory right now)

@spaniellove: Yeah, the closet installation companies are super expensive! I don't know what we're going to do. We're in a pre-war building so the walls aren't always the easiest to drill into or mount things. I think I might look into the DIY Home Depot things since I can customize what I need and where I need it. DH said the closet is the least of our worries ;)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Ooh, good to know! Especially through February!

I think those rods that go front to back in the closet actually pull out, so they're quite functional.

@LindsayInNY: right now The Container Store's Elfa systems & components are 30% off including the installation services. I think the reduced pricing lasts through early February.

@LindsayInNY: At some point we got a quote from the company that did other closets in our home and a slightly more elaborate version (with hampers) was at least a few hundred dollars. We ended up doing a DIY version from Home Depot and it looks nice, but we kind of wish we'd just gotten the custom closet because it would have enabled us to adjust the rod heights. Since we've switched rooms we may do that someday.

ETA: Never mind, $800+. Huge difference!

@LindsayInNY: We ended up going with something vaguely like the link above...shelves in the middle and two rods on one side, three rods on the other. I also keep socks, diapers, onesies, at-home pants, and blankets/sleep stuff in a dresser because when I'm changing him it's so much easier to just pull open a drawer.

I LOVE that closet! The middle, skinnier shelves could have some small baskets on them and be used for onesies, socks, hats, shoes, that sort of thing? Even some toys and books that you don't want to display, or that you want to rotate in and out - it could really help declutter the room.

The only thing about it I don't like is the way some of the hanging bars are positioned front to back instead of side to side... why would you want to have to search through the hung clothes like that? Does not seem practical, although it does look nice from a design perspective.

If you could start from scratch with a moderately sized reach-in closet for your nursery and configure the organization however you wanted, how would you arrange it? We're meeting with the company that does our closets and I'm not sure what to tell them!

The room will be LO's bedroom as he gets older, so the basic configuration will have to stay in place. There will be a wide dresser in the room so I don't have to cram everything into the closet!

ETA: Is this a useful layout? I see a lot of these 3-section designs and don't think there's room for a middle section any wider than that. But I hate folding, so those skinny shelves might be useless.
