My 3.5 year old would say "I have this" or a form of that sentence.

Last Sunday, someone gave her a small Olaf figurine. She doesn't have it. But she has an Olaf lego piece and she told the guy, "no thank you. I already have this." I had to jump in and explain to her that she doesn't have this piece and look, this one comes with sunglasses.

Mine is 2.5 and loves seeing things she already has so I'm sure she'd be really excited. She likes to go into bookstores and point out all the books that we already have at home. She is weird though. :)

LO is 2.5. She would say, "Another {X}!" If it's a toy she likes, she would be excited and say thank you. Sometimes she is not the most grateful gift recipient though. A friend brought her a Cinderella bracelet (and she loves Cinderella) and she threw it and said, "I don't like it." I was mortified. I kind of hold my breath when people give her gifts!

It's unpredictable how my LO would react. I can see it being okay or ugly. Either way I'd try to jump in and remind her that we should be thankful anytime someone gives us something. Gifts are hard.

@Madison43: My kid loves opening presents, and asks to open them and ask for more, whether he's the birthday boy or not, lol. He insisted on opening all my presents this year, haha. He doesn't really get the whole money and cost of things, so I think it's pretty innocent when he asks for more - it's just fun to him :).

It could go two ways.
Sometimes she is excited by gifts and would say "yay another xxx"
OR
she could get angry (she's sometimes overwhelmed with gift giving and gets upset) in which case she'll storm into the kitchen and throw said gift into the garbage with a good deal of drama. true story.

Luckily the few times this has happened they have just been excited that they got a gift.
But they've had other temper tantrums at non ideal times
I usually apologize but deal with the immediate temper tantrum. Then once kid has had time to cool off get them to go apologize.

My mom once gave her a book we already had and she said 'ohhh another one! I can keep this one in the bathroom!' I really don't think your lo's reaction is unusual though. 3yos are emotional little creatures. She was probably so excited about getting a present and then at that particular moment couldn't deal with the disappointment of getting a duplicate. I think you did the right thing explaining how to be grateful. If I were the gifter I wouldn't be offended at all, just feel bad that I got something she already had.
