I don't remember discipline in my toddler years, so have no clue there. When I was older, my mom was pretty creative in her disclipline--lots of extra cleaning, lots of writing apology letters and having to re-write them till they were grammatically perfect. She was a teacher. A few times I was grounded from reading because I was a huge bookworm that would read instead of doing chores or homework. My dad traveled a lot for work and his discipline tended to be more of the yelling-possible spanking scenario, but spanks were only for really, really awful stuff--I never got one from him! But my brother did for "big" events like major lying, etc.

Eta: I got spanked by my mom as least twice that I remember (with the hand, over clothes, on the butt. And slapped once as a teen for "backtalking". eh. I didn't resent her for any of those, probably because they were very few and far between.

Grounded with extra chores for bad grades and such.

Spanked (until I was 12 or so) for anything like lying. Then grounded afterwards.

I will do time outs with my kids and groundings when they're older. No spankings!

I guess this question came about because I have a Lo who is in the terrible twos full fledged. Who out there remembers how they were disciplined as a child and why it was effective. You can certainly tell me your horror stories too but I want to know some truly effective ways of discipline, how they work and why! (I do time-out for most no nos after two or three warnings and we spank when necessary).
