We drove 6 hours to Florida when she was 6 months. Both trips were great except for the drive home from FL. LO had her first ear infection (we actually left a day early because she was so sick) and she screamed for the first hour and a half of the drive before finally passing out. We spent it going to and from a hospital and introducing A to her family in super quick style. We took her to Spain and England when she was nine months but I think she actually coped better at six months... the second trip was too overwhelming. She will be 11 weeks old. I'm super nervous because she has been in a really good night time routine for about three weeks now and sleeping like a champ - I hope this doesn't mess with her routine and ruin it forever!!! And they're still immobile and content to play just about anywhere. I would travel with a baby that age anytime! We took LO on her first trip, an around the world trip, between 5.5 and 7 months old. It was easy peasy! She slept anywhere and everywhere, was still mostly EBF (plus a small bit of solids) and wasn't mobile yet, super easy. We just went to Bali with her a couple of weeks ago, at 14 months, and that was far more difficult. She was into everything, which in a developing country like Indonesia, where water is unclean and traffic laws are non-existent, was so much more difficult than our previous trips! Once baby #2 comes along, we're planning on doing another trip within the first six months as it's just so easy at that age! The older she got, the harder. I'm dreading drives this winter. Took her to Europe at 3.5 months & on a domestic trip (4 hours by plane) at 6 months. Honestly, I think the younger, the easier the actual traveling parts are. DH and I both agree that it would be better to travel with more family or another couple and we could give each other a couple of breaks. we went purposely though before LO started crawling. But now that I think about it, even though LO is mobile, he is also better at independent play and doesn't nurse as often so who knows, it might be more enjoyable to go now! His first trip was a car trip at 4 months. He was a terrible sleeper then and it was the same during the trip. Sleeping aside, the trip was fine. Since then, he's been to 3 continents and more than 10 countries and he rolls with it. We have another trip planned for January - DD will be 2.5 years old and Baby#2 will be approximately 3.5-4 months old. Eeeps. Wondering if that's too young or if it's a great age.
