I was one of those girls who dreamed about their future wedding... and always secretly read wedding magazines at the public library.

Then in college I started planning events (fashion shows and conferences) and LOVED it... so weddings + events = Wedding Planner! Voila!

I was always best at art and math, but knew majoring in art would severly limit my career options so I started out as a math major. I hated Calculus and C++ so I knew it wasn't right for me. I knew business would be a good major, so I literally opened the pamphlet for the business school and looked at the classes I would have to take for each major and Marketing looked like the most interesting. So marketing it was!

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a doctor. I chose my original major (Biological Sciences) with that intention. As I was doing my lower division classes and internships I discovered that I was horrible with patients (too much empathy. I cried a lot) and that I was really good at genetics. I also discovered that my real interest wasn't the patients with the weird diseases but the weird diseases themselves. So I switched my major to genetics and did my emphasis on infectious diseases.

@Adira: Haha, that's the problem with a writing career...you actually have to finish writing a book! And then you have to do it again, and again, and again!

There's no reason you should give up the dream. Getting published is a great addition to any career!

I wanted to be a teacher my entire life! So I got a BA in Liberal Studies and got my teaching credential... but halfway through my credential program, I knew it wasn't for me-- I just finished it because I was so close.

Now my career has NOTHING to do with teaching. LOL.

My whole life I always wanted to be in some kind of helping profession. As a little girl, it was pediatrician. Then later it was child psychologist. I went to college and declared a psych major. As I got into the classes, I hated it. I thought the professors were pretentious. Then I had some roommate issues and took a semester off. While I was off, I did some research into other majors. I discovered social work and thought it seemed like a much better fit for me.

I think I decided in high school that, although I love theater and performance arts, I was never going to make a career out of it. So I chose my majopr based on my other interests, reading and writing. I had no clue what I was going to do with a Literature degree for the majority of undergrad, but sometime my senior year I started getting interested in library sciences. Now I'm in grad school getting my library sciences degree and hoping to start a career as a public librarian in the near future. :)

@Minnie_Girl: Oooh, I'm so jealous of you!!! I've wanted to be an author since the 5th grade! I LOVED writing sooooooo much!

BUT, my parents felt like I wouldn't do well in the field since I almost never finished anything I started, and they were worried about me being able to support myself after college, so I decided to major in Computer Science instead since I had taken some CS classes in high school and enjoyed them a lot. So that's what I majored in, and I'm really happy I did! I LOVE being a Software Engineer! Though I do still dream of publishing a book someday...

I was in nursing and decided it was too hard to keep up with, and I had a general marketing class that came easily to me. So I decided to go with marketing, never planned to stick with it but just did.

I don't think I necessarily made the choice that makes me the happiest or even fullfilled, but I'm good at what I do and have been successful so far in my choice. I do always dream of going into teaching.

I was undecided between political science and social work – followed by law school. I was more interested in majoring in social work…but I worked full time during college and getting my degree in social work would have taken more than an extra year due to the required internships and class scheduling (which would have been very financially tricky for me to do since the reason I was working full time was because I paid for college myself after the first year). In the end, I majored in political science, which I was happy with.

I sort of “fell into” my career, but it was my education and work experience that got me in the door, and I’m extremely happy where I landed.

I'm a Manufacturing Engineer. In HS I always liked Physics and was good at math so I figured why not. I don't love it but I like it enough and the salary isn't bad either :-)

I tried so many things and hated a lot in college. I ended up Transfering out of my first college because I didn't see much there for me. When I got to Salisbury, I clicked with my comm classes. They had a TV and radio emphasis and I was smitten. It was an easy major and I didn't really learn many life skills but it got me my first job and that got me where I am today.

I was pre-med at first but it was too hard! So I bagged it and did economics instead so that I would have a good sensible degree. Haha. So happy I did that. I graduated early and started making great money vs still being in school for years and years. I guess I really didn't have a passion for medicine after all.

My dad chose my major. He was strongly against what I wanted to do (pediatrician). Asian parent NOT wanting their kid to be a doctor - crazy talk right? My dad said a dr career would be too stressful and long that I wouldn't marry until much too late. After many arguments, I obeyed my father and went down his path. I chose my career though.

I originally went to school to become a dentist, but I was in a liberal arts honors program my freshman year where we read/wrote a lot. My English professor at one point told me I was crazy to take all those science classes when he could tell I loved reading/writing. Over the summer I thought about it and ended up dropping all my bio classes on the first day of the new semester and switching to English. I had no idea what I was going to DO with that though. I just stumbled into Marketing/Design work, luckily. :) Oh, and when I told my parents I was switching my major my mom just laughed and said "I knew all along you'd end up with an English degree! You were writing plays when you were six years old." I wish she'd have filled me in before taking all those science classes freshman year though!

I "played school" when I was young and I've always enjoyed working with kids. What really cemented my dream was during senior year of high school. I took a class where I would go to the local elementary school and help the teacher/tutor for an hour a day. I ended up in a kindergarten class with the same teacher I had in kindergarten (pretty cool!).

I went to college for elementary ed (K-6), but after graduation I got a job working at a daycare as a preschool teacher and I've been hooked ever since.

I was totally going to be pre-vet in college, but then I took physics during my senior year in high school and found out I was really good at it. So I ended up majoring in physics, and got my PhD in a related field right afterwards. Now I'm going to be a physics professor starting in the fall. I thank my amazing high school physics teacher for pointing me in this direction. I'm hoping to inspire other women to pursue careers in the hard sciences.
