@catgirl: So sorry you guys are dealing with this! I get really frustrated when DH is sick (even though I know he can't help it) so I can imagine how you must feel with everything going on for this long.

@Anagram: F your coworker. That is so rude!

@catgirl: yeah, I actually just had a coworker tell me last week that long Covid is all in people’s heads. He said that to my face, when I myself and experiencing some long haul symptoms. My main symptoms are near-constant dizziness and migraine headaches about 5-6 days a week. I’ve been to so many doctors and have had an MRI. I also have burning pain in my ears but I’ve also been to an ENT and my ears are fine so everyone things it’s neurological and related to the dizziness and headaches. I have like 6 new medications and none of them even work that well. It is SO FRustrating to hear the “it’s just a cold” group.

I have lupus and sjogrens, so I already know my immune system sucks. I am so glad I was fully vaccinated and boosted because I shudder to think how bad id be right now if I hadn’t been. But like—pre-Covid, my autoimmune stuff was very well managed since my first initial flare up 3”4 years ago (that I posted about all the time back then). I take minimal medication, and the lowest dose. I generally felt totally normal prior to covid. And now I’m back to just ad bad as I was 4 years ago and it really sucks to feel minimized/expendable to shitty people like my coworker—who was like “my whole family got Covid and we were fine. People just need to get back to normal and live their lives. Stay home if they can’t.” Like—-hey fuck you too, douche bag. This is a coworker whose parents do his childcare, so he never has to even take sick days for his kids, because his parents take his kids when they are sick. Some of us have no family help, work full time whether we are sick or not, and still have to go places like work (fully in person for me as a teacher) and supermarkets because we don’t have anyone else to do that shit!

Anyway—-don’t get me started. It just will make me rage all day. It’s just scary that so many parents are teaching their kids that anyone who had a small/large preexisting condition, or who is overweight (more than half of Us adults), or is elderly is totally expendable. Like—how and when did our society become so disgusting. It’s sickening to me.

I hope your husband feels better soon. I know first hand it is a struggle.

@HappyBaker: I’m sorry. That must have been so hard for all of you. I totally agree that it feels like I cannot DD anything until literally moments before it happens. We have had to cancel/postpone so many things.

DH is 6.5 weeks out from when he got covid and he is still a mess. Lots of trouble breathing, chest pain, and exhaustion. He basically goes to work and comes home to sleep. Some days I have to drive him to and from work because he doesn’t feel safe driving. He can’t play with DD for more than five minutes without having a coughing fit/trouble breathing. He is still using the two inhalers he was prescribed in the first week. His doctor has referred him to the long haul clinic but they can’t even get him in until the end of March. I try really hard not to complain to him because, obviously I am not the sick one, but it’s breaking me to be in charge of everything at all times. I slept on the couch for a little over five weeks because his cough was so bad and we don’t have a guest room.

I really am so happy that for most people it is like a cold, but for households that experience a tougher case it is hell.

My 3 year old just tested positive Saturday morning. He had COVID at Thanksgiving. To demonstrate how quickly things can change - we all tested Friday morning because we were traveling Friday afternoon to stay with a family member who’s undergoing chemo. Everyone was feeling totally healthy and we all tested negative. Over the course of our 7 hour drive DS started getting really congested, so when we arrived we had him wear a mask when we entered their house, and just went to bed. Saturday morning we tested him again before letting him out of the bedroom (we were staying in the same room), and it was positive. So we immediately repacked and drove 7 hours home. 🤦‍♀️ Super emotional and draining couple of days as my kids just really wanted to spend time with their sick grandpa. Also had a fun surprise trip to a hotel scheduled for our way home that we then had to cancel. I’m just so tired of making plans and having them crash and burn, and of feeling like we can never tell our kids any plans because they are so disappointed when things don’t work out.

@LadyDi: I totally understand your feelings. If it’s any comfort, the rapid tests are very good at turning positive when the viral load is high enough to be infectious. If they were around people while still having negative tests, they likely weren’t very contagious, if at all.

@LadyDi: it’s hard not to feel bad I’m sure but we’re really at the “it could happen to anyone” stage. And it’s so random whether they’ll pass it on or not it seems.

My 3yo started acting sick today and has a fever now and like you I’m wondering how much we need to test to feel sure it’s not Covid! I guess I’ll test her before the big kids go to school and go from there. We’re supposed to be hosting a bake sale for a service project Saturday 😬

I guess we're past the surge but I'm just resurrecting this to see how everyone is doing and complain about my own situation.

Last weekend DS2 came down with a fever and vomiting for 24 hours. Tested him and it was negative. On Monday DS3 and DH both became feverish, vomiting, GI issues. DH tested negative. Didn't test DS because I assumed since the other two tests were negative that they all had caught the same stomach bug. DS2, our patient zero, was completely fine after 24 hours. On Wednesday DS1 had a fever after school, I expected him to start vomiting but he never did. DH went to get a PCR test yesterday instead of using another at home test because he still felt off and it came back positive this morning. So then I took an at home test and it was positive also and I've since developed a cough but no other symptoms. All of the kids seem to be better now but I feel really guilty about the people we've exposed just assuming that they had a stomach bug since we had not one but TWO at home tests that were negative. UGH. I sent DS2 to preschool on Monday because he had been fever and vomit free for 24 hours. I felt like such an a-hole contacting them this morning.

How long did your kids test positive for? My DD is totally fine but still getting a very strong positive on day 7. She can go back to school as soon as she is negative but I don’t want to waste tests if it’s going to take until day 10. I feel way better today on day 5. Somehow my husband is still negative but I don’t see how that can last. Hope everyone is hanging in there!

Thanks for all the tips! I started to get a sore throat last night and today definitely feel it. DD is all better though. She was only sick one day, really, which is crazy. DH still feels ok. We can’t isolate really but he and I can wear masks and maybe sleep in separate beds. Not sure it’s worth it if he’s going to get it anyway. Has anyone successfully avoided spread without isolating?

As much as I told myself I was feeling better right away DH and I were still taking decongestants (me more than him) and taking naps (him more than me) until Day 13.

The kids finally went back to school today which will hopefully bring us some balance.

@Jess1483: My DH still tested positive on day 12 and his doctor advised him to just stop testing. He is currently using one inhaler twice a day and a second inhaler 4-5 times a day. He gets winded just getting ready for the day or taking a shower and is still extremely tired and foggy. He was healthy, active, and fully vaccinated and boosted.

DD and I have still tested negative. DH left his isolation today and will be masking everywhere, even at home, for five days.

@JJ2626: I totally felt (/feel) that way too! So annoying. Our middle DS (6-vaxxed) got it first, then it spread like wildfire to everyone but me (DH vaxxed and boosted, DD-2, DS9--vaxxed), then eventually a week later I got it (vaxxed and boosted). The kids came through it way faster/better than us, so fingers crossed it will pass quickly for you!

In other news, DH is on day 10 and is still testing positive, which is bananas. The kids were totally clear of symptoms by day 5ish, so I only tested DS9, and he was negative.

@JJ2626: at least for us, being prepared for a lot of vomiting (having a bucket next to her 24/7) and water/ginger ale/oyster crackers available was so helpful. She only had minimal respiratory symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing)
I didn't even try to keep any distance from her since I recently got boosted too, and while I did eventually test positive, had negligible symptoms. 6yo felt MUCH better after ~4 days but stayed home from school for a 2nd week due to my husband's more significant case and us not isolating from him.
Good luck, I hope you all recover quickly or escape infection altogether.

Well it got us. Our nanny tested positive and now DD (4 yo) has a fever. Her rapid was negative but I’m pretty sure she has it. Fever is kind of high but she’s in good spirits. Has a bit if a stomach ache too. DH and I feel ok so far but I can’t see how we avoid it. We’re boosted so hopefully won’t be too bad. We’ve been incredibly careful so I’m frustrated and annoyed that we got it when less careful people haven’t, but I’m trying not to panic. Hopefully symptoms are mild and we’re over it soon! Any tips for managing in little kids greatly appreciated, though!

My family of 3 have cycled through Covid since Christmas. We got it from DHs brother, we think, Christmas Eve as he got a + the day after Christmas after not feeling great over the holiday. DH felt sick first, but our PCR tests only showed our LO(6) was + on Thu after Christmas. She was vomiting & feverish for 2 days & tired (for her) for several more days. DH started to get better, then suddenly worse the week after our PCR test. A rapid test showed us both + & he was downright miserable for a full week. He was vaccinated & I am plus a booster right before Christmas. Thank God I hardly felt any symptoms so I could care for them. I'm so sick of it all, though, because now we've all been home together for 4 weeks and have gotten NOTHING done. I can't wait for my kid to go back to school Tues & hopefully hubby too. Love him, but F men are such babies when sick. 😵‍💫 He's feeling better, but seems unable to do *anything*. 😒
I am thankful we didn't need any medical care. ❤️

@MrsSCB: Yes, I think that will be the deciding factor. Luckily tests aren’t too hard to come by in my town, so we have a few. So I’ll test on Friday to see if we should call off the dog sitter (she knows what’s going on), and make the decision then.

@Jess1483: I hope you continue to improve quickly! Do you have access to a rapid test? I’d feel good about going somewhere on day 10 if I was also negative on a rapid test by that point. My husband and sister were negative on rapid tests by day 7 or so (though they still finished out their isolation periods). I know they can be hard to find these days, though.

I finally tested positive this morning (I was certainly not isolated from my 2 year old ;). Blessing is that everyone else is on the mend (if not all the way better), so at least DH can take over once he's done working on Friday. I have a few classes to get through this weekend, but not more than two hours at a time (I teach online). I have chills and a sore throat, but it isn't too bad yet. Bummer is I'm not sure I can join my family on a ski trip next weekend (we'd expose my parents). We're discussing it, since the day we leave is day 10, but I'm not sure. (I could drive up one day later as well).

DH (who is fully vaccinated and boosted) has been in isolation at home since Saturday night. He had to go to a pop up covid clinic today because he has had chest pain and trouble breathing since Sunday. They prescribed two inhalers but of course all pharmacies are out of stock and there are many people ahead of him in line for them, so it could take 2-4 days for them to be available. He needs to go back to a different site tomorrow for x-rays because they need to rule out pneumonia or bronchitis. They said he needs to stay in full isolation at home through Saturday night at a minimum but possibly longer.

DD and I took rapids this morning since it's been five days since we have had contact with DH, and they were negative.

@agold: I’m glad you had a mild experience. That has not been the case in my family. My family is very split with vaxxed/unvaxxed and Covid is ripping through all of us on the past month. So far all of my vaccinated family (except me and my daughter, who have not had cases “like every other illness”) have had mild cases, whereas my unvaccinated family have had moderate cases. Not hospitalized, but my brother was out of work for 5 weeks, as was his unvaccinated wife. My cousins who are unvaccinated are on week 4 of illness. These are all people on their 30s-50s, with no preexisting conditions. It’s definitely not just a cold for many people.

And as I said, I’m immune compromised, which is why I said I’m very grateful to be vaccinated.

ETA: even with my two autoimmune illnesses, I have been mostly back at work since last week. But I am still not 100%, and neither is my daughter. But we are better off than my unvaccinated niece, who experienced 11 consecutive days of fever at 7 years old.

We’re 10 days past first symptoms now and everyone but me is back to 100% I still feel congested but this often happens to me with regular colds too. I think my nasal passages are small or something because I often can’t kick congestion and it turns into a sinus infection. But otherwise, I’m feeling some relief to have this behind us. We were lucky that the family we might have exposed we’re all negative and we didn’t expose the kids schoolmates. So most of my big fears around catching it didn’t come to pass.

@Anagram: so glad you’re feeling better!! I’ve been most worried throughout the pandemic about the possibility of exposing my parents, who each have a different autoimmune disorder—I know it’s super stressful to manage. I’m sorry you felt so unwell!

@Anagram: I'm fully unvaxxed and it was pretty mild for me. Not unlike anything else I've ever had over the years. Even more so for my husband. No problems with my kids. I'm praying this is true for all - vax or no vax.

@Jess1483: hope you guys feel better soon.

We are at 3 weeks today past the positive PCR, and I'm finally starting to feel semi-back to normal. And I'm triple vaxed, so I can't imagine how bad I would have felt if I were totally unvaccinated with my pre-existing conditions.

@bhbee: I actually didn't know about the "let down affect" until I found it with doctor google just this last week. But it makes absolute sense to me. And very interesting about anxiety meds helping. I always think I'm close to needing them, at least to maybe help me sleep. Thanks so much for sharing what you know.

@JJ2626: @catgirl: @Chuckles: She's doing well now! She had a really hard night, but then bounced back after that. She still has a low temp, but generally my kiddos are fine now. DH is still pretty sick with chills/fever, but that's quite typical for him--he gets hard by colds that barely register with me. I continue to be negative even after sleeping with various kiddos and being about as close as humanly possible to them all. I thought I was feeling a bit sick a couple days ago, but I seem to have rebounded, so I guess my booster is working? I'm going to be so mad if I test positive in 5 days and have to isolate for that.

I'm also really worried about the new 5-day time frame. I just read a study saying patients were just as infectious in days 7-9 as earlier in the illness. I'm keeping my kids home the full 10, but there probably aren't many doing so.

@agold: I’m glad it was mild! Also so interesting, my husband gets let-down fevers/flu symptoms too. Used to be every vacation from work (whether to visit family or a destination or whatever - any time off) - but since he started staying on anxiety meds it’s actually gone away which I find fascinating. I’d never heard of it before we got together.
