@NovBaby1112: Isn't it frustrating when they nap forever for everyone EXCEPT you? I think people (DH, included), think I'm crazy when I try to describe what our days our like with 5 naptime routines (well...10 total, since we do each one twice).

Well damn, for his second nap today he woke up after 40 minutes, I nursed him while rocking and set him back down...he rolled around and stood up a few times but now he's back asleep!

@mrskc: Cat napper mama here! LO is 6.5 months and rarely naps over an hour . . . she had a couple on longer naps during her first few weeks, but after that . . . not so much. I can get an hour-hour and a half if I hold her (and let her have a boob when she fusses at around 30-40ish minutes. She does, however, sleep a little better for the nanny . . . lil stinker!

Ugh E always sleeps 40 minutes and wakes up at the end of the sleep cycle. I usually rock him back to sleep because I know he's still tired! After he's slept an hour and a half he wakes up happy and refreshed.

@FutureMrsMcK: ha I hate the tease naps...I mean I love them, but I get so excited when LO sleeps 2 hours, and then it doesn't happen again for like a week.

Well, he woke up at the 40 min mark BUT I was able to give him the paci and sit with him until he fell back asleep! We'll see how long this cycle lasts...

LO started the 45 minute naps around 4 months and kept doing them until...almost 8 months? At which point she switched to only 1 nap/day at daycare. She is too stimulated there to sleep in the a.m. and then crashes hard for a 2hr nap from 1-3. At home on the weekends, she'll sometimes take a short morning nap (apparently we're boring?) and then a 1-1.5 hr nap at her regular afternoon time.

Ha mine just woke up after exactly 40 minutes!

ETA: Sorry, no advice. I've been slowly trying to push his awake time from 90 minutes to 2 hours, but half the time his naps are still between 30-40 minutes, with the random 1+ hour naps thrown in to tease me with that could be.

@mrskc: prolific cat napper here! it was maddening! the only time that he would sleep longer was in arms - which we did if he was over tired.

at 8.5 mo it is waaaaaaay better. Sometimes he even does a 2 hour morning nap in his crib. Amazeballs.

@mrskc: Mine was a swing napper for the most part until the 30 minute nap started (then, I figured might as well put him in his crib since his naps are so crappy anyways!) He took some monster naps from newborn - 3.5 months...so not always a 30 minute napper!

@hilsy85: around 7mo he outgrew it which was right around the time that he started to transition to two naps. Now at 8.5mo we get two 1-1.5 hour naps twice a day. Some days he'll do the three nap thing again and do like (3) 45 min naps. Those days are a bummer because it pushes his bed time later.

We never nap trained though, just helped him to sleep when he was tired.

Following along! My son is still taking 4-5 30-40 minute naps. He's 5 months now, and I keep waiting for the naps to get longer and less. I would love for him to just take 2 long naps a day.

@winniebee: This is exactly what drives me bonkers about the frequent cat naps! I hate having to go thru it 4-5 times a day. Right now I'm working half days, so the nanny does 2 of his naps usually, but it's still so annoying!

Were any of your LOs always cat nappers? My son has hardly napped past an hour since he was a newborn (unless he was in my arms).

@hilsy85: I've read and read and read on 30/40 minute naps (we get 30 around here) and it seems like most outgrow around 6 months. We've tried everything but it's rare for anything past 30 - even if he's sleeping where he wants (on one of us). I've tried everything to no avail and am just trying to focus on making it easier to put him down/get him doing more of the work on his own. I always leave him in there when he wakes.... he wakes completely silently and just rolls around and will eventually babble and coo. Before I got a video monitor I thought he was sleeping wayyy longer... turns out he just is happy hanging out in his crib! I've left him up to 30 minutes with him still happy but he's never fallen back asleep haha.

@mrsjyw: yeah I read that as well...but if I leave L in his crib for more than 5-10 minutes after he wakes up, he starts wailing...he won't stay quietly/happily in there!

@NovBaby1112: for naps, I initially tried Ferber/CIO for one, and it was awful. SO now I have a really strong nap routine (sleep sack, white noise, rock him while i sing a song, and then put him in the crib). He goes in drowsy but awake and I then sit in the room with him until he falls asleep. I'll shush him from my seat, and replace the paci if he gets really upset. I have no idea if it's "good" to do that, or if it's creating more bad habits, but I'm not rocking him to sleep and he does go down pretty easily for at least the first two naps of the day! And there's hardly any crying, which makes me happy.

@T-Mom: wow. That is rough! At least she was an awesome night timee sleeper though!

@mediagirl: ok so more evidence that maybe a transition is in the works...

Sounds like we had the same experience as a few other people!! M started napping longer stretches (at home) around 7 months. She still takes short naps at daycare (I think because the noise and lights wake her up). At home we do white noise, dark and cool room. Once she started taking longer naps, she transitioned to 2 naps a day.

I'm sorry to say that for us, DD did not outgrow 45 min naps until she was 15 months and dropped to one nap! It was a long road. I tried a few things, such as when she reached the end of the 45 min cycle, I crept into her room and would try and pat her through the transition (I think I got this from No Cry Sleep Solution or one of the other sleep books I was reading), and this worked all of one times. It actually drove me crazy (major contributor to my PPD) so I dropped it and was thankful that she slept 13 hr at night. I thought about CIO to train her to sleep 1.5 hr, but I couldn't bring myself to do it!

@hilsy85: my LO is 4 months, and ever since 3 months, has only taken 40-45 min naps, with the occasional 2 hour nap every few days or so. its so frustrating but i am hoping it is just something she will grow out of like others have said! she wakes up happy and ready to play, so i just go with it. that;s awesome that your LO is putting himself to sleep for naps! can you share your tips?? i still have to rock to sleep for all naps, but not nighttime...

@hilsy85: Hmmm. That might be a tad too soon? I don't know, it's hard to tell, but go by sleepy cues. Maybe try extending to 1:30 or 1:40 and see what happens.

LO still has 40 min naps. He usually has one 40 min nap and then a second nap that is between 1 - 2 hours. B is almost 10 months.

@wheres_c: I hope you have better luck with that!
I hear it works for some people, but it ended up stressing me out!
