Sounds like a great opportunity! Is the new company paying to relocate you? Because having movers will be amazing and help you out so much

Just an update: His current company got somewhat close in their counteroffer, but didn't address the bigger issue of more responsibility or a clearer future career path. Plus, it's too hard to turn down a (still significantly) higher salary. His manager did say that he will be the first to congratulate him and shake his hand if he chooses to leave, so he's parting on good terms. But we're moving. With a toddler. And a pregnancy. And two dogs.

And I feel pretty sick about it, but also a little bit excited. I've never done this before, there's so much fear of the unknown, but this is the best decision for our family right now.

Thanks again for everyone's input!

So I'm going to be the one who says something different. I've been told by many people throughout my career and have read several articles stating that you never take a counter offer from your current company. The reasoning behind this is that your current employer now knows that you aren't 100% "loyal" (for lack of a better word) and this may cloud any future promotions/raises that may come along.

Obviously there are other factors at play here and I'm not saying that there aren't exceptions but I would take this into consideration.

@blackbird: I was just going to say the same thing...sometimes you have to leave and go back to get the increase in salary. There are, at least where I work, global rules about what you can be increased from year to year as well as for counteroffers.

Ours is the same (big company etc)...a feasible option may be to leave and then leverage that management ability to gain a new one at his old company. Most people make the best moves (including salary wise) by leaving and then returning. It's always a risk though but if he doesn't burn his bridges, it's definitely a good one

@blackbird: That's what we're hoping. A promotion to a higher level, even if the salary doesn't quite match the other job, would go a long way. His current company is great, but it's so large and I guess "top heavy" that it takes forever to move up. He's been nominated for leadership seminars and that kind of thing, but he wants actual management experience sooner rather than later.

Thanks everyone for your responses!

If they match the pay there is no question, though I'll be sad to say goodbye to that signing bonus (much of which would go toward the move, but still, there would definitely be some left over). But his manager basically told him they cannot match the pay, although they will come as close as possible. I guess we just have to wait and hear the offer.

@scg00387: LOL at the night nanny and tropical vacations. It's still not quite that cushy - and yeah, toddler+pregnancy+move sounds awful. Glad you survived!

If they give him a counter offer that is all close I would definitely stay! There are a lot of perks obviously to staying, and it shows they value him. Did he give specifics about why he was leaving.... 30k is HUGE so hopefully they heard that number somewhere and match it!

@keepcalmcarrie: I did this. No resentment and that was almost 2 years ago and I was pregnant when I did it. I should say though that I work for an extremely small company and I stayed for the flexibility; my job offered an extremely family friendly offer (Fridays off) and matched the pay.

I would stay! Flexibility is so hard to gauge before you work somewhere. Moving with a toddler and pregnant is terrible, just did it, and I was going stir crazy in the small town we just moved from. Unless that extra money is going to hire you a night nanny and lots of tropical vacations ;)

It sounds like you two have been really open with each other so far. As far as resentment, I think if you two communicate and follow your hearts, you can't go wrong.

All of this sounds a bit stressful ... maybe no matter what option you go with, you two should plan a little trip or weekend getaway to celebrate! It'll make you feel like you made the right decision (which I'm sure you will), and give you a reward for so much hard work.

Best wishes to you!!

I don't see any resentment factor. It's almost the opposite...you want someone who it that into you even more. Them showing their value of him with the counter is huge. And this happens all the time. (Not for me as a public school employee...but my husband has lots of experience.)

I think the hours will be similar. But since he works from home so often at his current job, he often works early or late. That's not a problem for me since he still sees LO (and me) and can help around the house, with bedtime, etc. But the new, smaller company is a more traditional office environment, so I could see late hours being more of a problem there...

@keepcalmcarrie: we had a similar counter offer situation when my husband gave his resignation at his previous job-- his boss said he really wanted to keep him and offered to match whatever salary he'd been offered st his current job....but when his boss tried to clear that with HR, they said there was a cap on how much of a raise they could give in one year, so we ended up going with the new job.

I will say...since you have a kid and another on the way I think my main concern would be work culture and work stress/hours for your DH. Sometimes at smaller companies, work hours are longer. Will his hours be similar at the new job or will they expect him to work late more often?

@Mrs. Jump Rope: He'd like both, please! In all seriousness, right now a higher salary is the bigger priority. The COL in the other area is much lower, but nice housing is limited and the public schools aren't nearly as good.

NB: I think you live in our hometown too. Which is clearly the greatest place on earth, why would anyone want to leave ;)

I'll try to keep this brief...

My husband currently works for a large company in his field - one of the top 5 in the country. He is on a good career track, makes a very good salary, has a great relationship with his boss, and has work from home privileges whenever he chooses (which is almost all the time, which is really nice). This job is also in our hometown, very close to my family and not too far from his.

He was recently recruited by a company that is much smaller (still mid-sized and growing, but like 1/40th of his current company's size). This job would pay 30 percent more in base salary, offers a substantial signing bonus, and has a higher potential annual bonus. It could give him management experience in the near future, which he probably won't get at his current company for quite awhile. It's about 2.5 hours away from any major city (which would be ours). We don't know anyone in the area.

We decided to accept, he communicated his acceptance via email a few days ago and just received the HR paperwork yesterday. The hiring manager still hasn't clarified a few things, so although they've asked him to send back his signed offer letter tomorrow by the end of the day, I don't think that's happening (the questions to be answered are somewhat important). This company has been SLOWWW throughout the entire interview/job offer process, which I know is typical, but it's still a little annoying.

So he gave his current manager notice today... and they asked if he would be willing to consider a counteroffer. He said yes, I agreed. His boss, and his boss's boss (who both seem to really value him) are taking it to HR tomorrow. I really don't want to list our house for sale and try to move in the second half of pregnancy with a toddler and two dogs to a small town where we don't know anyone. The money is really, really good - so good that I was willing to do it, but if his current company comes close, I would really like to stay. Is that a bad move for DH, though, career-wise? Will there be resentment?

This whole process has been really overwhelming and emotionally draining. I'm just ready for it to be over, either way.
