@2PeasinaPod: thanks!! I called her as soon as I found out yesterday which was about 15 minutes after I first spoke with her. I'm just glad that she was nice about it. Thank you for your insight since you're in HR!

I'm in HR, and this definitely wouldn't hurt your chances. Things come up...life happens. I'd appreciate a call as soon as you knew about it, and it sounds like the recruiter did too. They understand that things happen beyond your control.

Glad everything worked out!

Just an update: the recruiter called me back this morning and was super understanding of me changing the interview. She was very nice, so I think I was freaking myself out over nothing.

Thanks for all of the advice!

It's definitely not something you have to worry about. I would just explain the situation to the recruiter, and he/she should be more than understanding. Most of the time, the recruiter will want to make it work because you're a candidate they are interested in!

I've had to reschedule interviews before. It was nerve-wracking but it didn't blow my chances. Most employers understand that if an interview is during work hours, your current position has to take precedence, and as @plaidpants said, it shows you are a good employee.

I always assume prospective employers would want to know you are a good employee at your current job!

I've done this three times (one job I ended up not taking but had interviewed and been offered the position) adn each time I made sure to interview either before 9 or after 5 or during lunchtime. If you get any push back, say it's a doctors appointment that you can't miss, it's really hard to argue with that. My industry is so small and everyone knows each other, so hiring managers are more likely to be willing to meet you for coffee at 8am for an interview or a drink after work. It's so hard to keep anything a secret!

But I don't think you blew your chances, if they think you're valuable enough to bring in for an interview they have incentive to work around your schedule. Just make sure that when they call back to reschedule that you try to do it for a time that your boss can't argue with and don't give her a choice about it - take a vacation day if you have to.

I don't think so. Explain that you're currently employed and have a prior obligation that you weren't aware of at that time. Ask if it could be rescheduled to a later time. A lot of people are aware of the concerns with interviewing discretely (or not) while employed.

Hmm. I don't think that would rub them the right way. If someone called me to reschedule an interview, i'd drop them to the bottom of my list.

There's no one else who can cover for your boss?

So, a recruiter just called for a job I've been dying to interview for and that I want very badly. She asked me could I interview next Wednesday at 10:30 am, I said yes, and she gave me all of the info I needed to be prepared for the interview. Before I said yes, I cleared it with my manager and she said that was fine (she's more of my friend). No even 5 minutes after scheduling the interview, my mgr looked in her calendar and saw she had a work related meeting at the same exact time as my interview. So I have I stay and cover for her. If I call to reschedule the interview, is that like guaranteeing I won't get the job. My husband seems to think so. Ugh, I'm so mad!!
