It is the cheap Vicks one and the directions didn't say no rugs, just some other surfaces. Unfortunately there's no level setting so I do close her door but crack her window, turn the fan on low or eventually open her door when she is asleep. It's a really light mist so no moisture accumulates. We always keep the door shut. When he's sick, we keep it cranked up to get the room nice and moist and when the heater's on, we just keep it on low, which doesn't make the room feel too much different, but does help with the dryness. Our manual says not to put it on carpet, wood or a towel ? I have his on a table right now (wood) but am wondering what the heck kind of surface they expect you to use ? Glass? Cookie sheet on the floor (ha!) </p>
