That is warm steam. I'm not sure when we'll use which one, but we now have both. Lesson? In the summer we use it mainly as white noise (it's super loud and the perfect frequency to drown out voices) without filter or water, but in the winter we actually use it as humidifier. I recommend getting a reliable hygrometer so you know the humidity level in your baby's room to know when it's too dry or humid. My sons' allergist actually doesn't recommend humidifiers b/c it actually creates mold if you don't monitor the humidity level properly while using it.
