Thanks ladies!

@locavore_mama: percy jackson's main female, Annabeth, uses a knife :) but, another vote for percy jackson based on the books! you can get the boxed set, too, paperback. the next series - the heroes of olympus - is the same group of characters, but with an additional storyline thrown in (at first, then they merge). it alternates between male and female leads/povs. Annabeth - the main female in Percy Jackson series - is the one with the knife.

ETA - Annabeth is daughter of Athena, super smart/wisdom/loves to read. So I think that not only are the series phenomenal (um, I just read the latest a few weeks ago) but she's a great role model!

Yes, Percy Jackson instead! I'm an elementary librarian. I tell the students all the time that the Hunger Games is a middle school level book. Their parents can take them to the public library if they really want it.

I agree re too much violence in a book as a gift (although I read American Psycho in jr high, go figure). Around that age I really enjoyed The Giver, Wrinkle In Time series, and the Hobbit -- all similar adventure type books. I also agree Narnia would be a good series if she hasn't already read it. My cousin is really into the Percy Jakson series and is about that age.

@locavore_mama: I agree with PPs it depends on her and her parents. I was an elementary librarian when the series first came out, and I had a ton of 5th graders really into it (they had to put it on hold from the middle schools and do an interlibrary loan). Their parents didn't mind at all.

But my own sister wouldn't let my niece read them till she was in Middle School.

@plantains: yeah, my niece is very mature for her age and is really smart so the complexity doesn't worry me. But she's a nurturer at heart so I think the violence (kids killing kids) would be too disturbing for her.

I think the complexity is totally fine for a 10yo, but the violence could be a bit much. Personally, at 10 I would have read and loved them but I was also reading John Grisham et al at 10 so I'm not the best example I guess.

It depends on the kid, really. I had some of my 5th graders read it, and it was perfect for some of them, and others were quite disturbed. I would check with her mom or her teacher- they should have a pretty good understanding of her maturity and her reading level when it comes to this sort of thing.

Awesome choice for a gift, though!

I think they're great books but might be a touch complex for a 10yo.... has she read the Percy Jackson books? The strong female lead in that series carries a bow and arrow (I'm almost positive.. It's been a while since I read them), and they would be great for a kiddo around her age. Greek mythology + YA action + demigod powers = Win in my book!

Hmmm well there is a lot of violence in those books, which may be why it's rated for grade 7 and above more than the complexity of the writing itself. If she's a strong reader and wants to try it, I'd get it for her. Make sure it's OK with her parents to be reading some of that subject matter.

ETA: Thanks everyone! I've decided that the violence (kids killing kids) of the books is inappropriate for my niece who has a very nurturing nature.
Any suggestions for a similar series with a strong female lead who also wields a bow & arrow? ;)

My niece has asked for the Nerf Rebelle Bow so I can only assume it's because of The Hunger Games. I wanted to get her a book series with this "toy" gift. So I thought why not the trilogy but the reading level on Amazon is stating Grades 7 and above.

For anyone that has read it do you think the reading level is ok for a 10 year old? She has really started loving reading in the past two years.
