I asked the pediatric dietician at work about this, and she told me that unless the baby is fluid restricted for medical reasons, there is no reason whatsoever to limit their intake. As long as you feed on demand, and don't "push" them to drink extra at each bottle, they should eat as much as they want.

I am going to ask the pediatric dietician that I work with about this formula limit thing, because it just doesn't seem right to me to limit a babies intake. They know what they need!

Our pediatrician recommended starting cereal earlier, rather than upping the formula over 32oz. I told him I disagree and will give him a little more formula instead.

We upped his formula just a half oz yesterday (at each feeding), and he was much more content.

Thanks ladies! I really did not want to start cereal because he wanted a HALF OZ more.

@zippylef: DS was doing almost 40 oz a day at 3/4 months, too. I've formula fed both of my kids, and I've never heard of limiting their bottles. What does your doctor recommend you do instead of feed him more?

That seems funny to restrict it. If a baby's breastfed, it's not like you wouldn't offer them the breast again. You'd let them eat until they were satisfied, as often as they needed. I think there's a big difference between using food as a pacifier, and not feeding a hungry baby.

But LO isn't here yet, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt ;).

@BabyBoecksMom: i agree with this. If a baby is hungry, you feed them.

I also never heard of a limit. I find it so odd! Honestly, I'd continue feeding. You'll know when an infant has had enough/too much because he'll vomit.

I've never heard of a limit on the amount of formula! Baby 411 (my go-to book) says babies 2-4 months would drink approximately 21-40 ounces a day. It seems like every baby would be a little different.

@ValentineMommy: He might just be going through a growth spurt. At that age, you really can't overfeed your baby, so if he's signaling that he's still hungry, I would try giving an extra ounce or two. If it is a growth spurt, it will only last a few days and then he'll go back his normal intake.

Thanks so much everyone! There are some great ideas in there.

He's already on the slowest flow nipple, but I'll try some distraction. If that doesn't work and he's still upset, I'll probably increase a little bit. I really don't want to start cereal yet, and think a liiiiiiiiiiiiittle bit more formula is probably better than cereal.

We went through this and did two things:

1. Give a pacifier after his bottle. He may just want to keep sucking but is not actually hungry.
2. Stood up and walked him around the room for a minute. This distracted from the fact that he wasn't drinking anymore and worked 99% of the time.

Good luck!

Maybe if u just increased his formula by a quarter or half an ounce he would be content? Then u wouldn't be going over his formula allowancw byy much.

My son is on formula and was drinking 32-36 ounces at his peak I think around 4-5 months and his pedi was not concerned

At that age, I'm almost positive that C was topping 40oz in a day. Our ped never told me that was a bad thing. She was a very big, hungry baby too.

@ValentineMommy: Do you think maybe he is crying for some other reason? Drank too fast? Gas? It seems like it could be something else given that 8 oz would be enough to make him not hungry. Maybe he wants more out of comfort?

Can you slow the flow? Young babies love to suck and sometimes act hungry, but really just want the comfort of sucking for longer. I suggest using the slowest flow nipple and feeding him in a upright position with the bottle parallel to the floor so the flow of the formula is slower.

hmmm, could you try feeding him more frequently, but less in each bottle? so say every 2-3 hours feed 4 oz?

The pediatrician says no more than 32oz, as does the formula feeding guide. I'm not sure why. I've looking it up and seen all different reasons.

Why can't you feed him more formula? Did your pediatrician say no more than 32 oz a day?

I wouldn't start rice cereal or other solids until at least 4 months.

My LO is only 3months old and already eating the max amount of formula allowed (32oz a day). He was, and is, a big baby. He's 26'' tall, and almost 15 lbs.

This past week, he's started crying after his bottle, looking for more. It breaks my heart, but he already takes 8oz in a sitting!

The doctor said at his 2month appt that they normally wait until 4 months to introduce rice cereal, but because he's so big and consumes so much, that he may have to start cereal earlier.

I keep reading all these reports about how rice cereal is just a filler and not good for babies so young. I don't know what else I can do though!!! I hate to see him hungry, but I also don't want to introduce something that isn't going to be good for him.

Any ideas? Anyone else have this happen?
