We want to get something really fuel efficient for our new car b/c one of us will be doing a long highway commute. Right now we're looking at the Prius, the new plug-in Prius, the Volt, and the new hybrid Honda Fit. I think we're going to be priced out on the Volt, and I'm guessing we'll either go for the hybrid Honda Fit or the plug-in Prius.

right now i'm driving my mother's hybrid rather than my pacifica =) it's a toyota highlander. normally i get gas each week (pacifica gets 14 mpg, no joke) and i've had the highlander for 2 1/2 weeks and finally had to put gas in it today! i couldn't find the thing to open the gas tank, lol. it's fun to drive, it doesn't feel sluggish at all and i had all 3 rows full today, but that leaves crap for space in the trunk, a maclaren quest almost didn't fit! i'd love one of the new prius v once i get rid of my pacifica (which i love, i just feel guilty for driving such an environmental nightmare)

I have a Prius C and I love it! However, if we were to be any taller (DH is 5'9", I'm 5'3") we would need a larger car. Our carseat is behind the passenger seat because the clips are behind the two side seats in the back and I didn't feel safe putting the seat in the center using a clip from each side, reaching (it actually says in the manual that the clips are on each side passenger seat and doesn't mention the center at all). The Prius V is much bigger.

@regberadaisy: You got it, the CT is like a euro wagon? Is that what they call it? We were thinking that with a car seat and our dog we needed the SUV. We originally got the nonhybrid and the first time I took it out I saw the gas usage and we had to take it back! They were...very kind.

@spaniellove: ohmygosh. Sooo se-xay.
My brother has a old RX300 and I loove LExus. They ride sooo smooth. I didn't know they have hybrids! Dang you!

Is the RX 450h more of a SUV size and the CT more of a hatchback size? I was hoping to find a hybrid SUV size.

I have a Lexus CT200h and RX450h. When we got the CT I looked at the Prius but my husband and I were really uncomfortable in the driver's seat and we're not tall people. As @beachmama pointed out, the Prius V may be bigger.

It's true that you're not exactly going to see a return on the premium for several years and what you're getting until then is the satisfaction of paying less per month for gas and knowing you're doing the environment a favor. For us it's worth it because we get gas maybe once every 6-8 weeks whereas I saw firsthand that the nonhybrid RX with my same driving habits would have been every 1-2 weeks. If you do a lot of stop and go driving and don't gun it, you might be able to save a lot of gas with the right hybrid.

I shouldnt complain because my car is free from work and I get to use it without limitations for personal use, but I have the Ford Fusion hybrid and it drives me a little nuts sometimes. Every 3 yrs or 60K miles we have to turn in our co car and order a new one. I had a normal Ford Fusion before and really liked it, and when I had to re-order, the hybrid was offered so I thought that would be cool. My main gripe is that the trunk is WAY SMALLER than the regular fusion. Like WAY. And I dint think the back seat is as big, bc all of the electric stuff is in the back of the car, so it hogs trunk/back seat room. I don't know how I'mgoing to manage a stroller and stuff in addition to all the work stuff I keep back there. Also, the clicker doesnt work until you're right at the car, which the Ford dealership says is a common issue w/the hybrid. So if you're looking for your car in a parking lot, you're screwed. Or God forbid, ever TRULY need to hit the panic button, you're screwed unless you're 3 ft away from the car.

I probably wouldn't even notice all this if I hadnt had a normal Fusion before:)

With that being said I can go 550 miles on a full tank, although I'm ashamed to say that I dont know how much it costs bc I put it on the work gas card and never look:/

We Put the carseat on the passenger side so I could see it from the drivers seat. Also I think if it was in the center seat, it would block the center console from sliding all the way open. We have the Britax B Safe seat.

The newer Prius V is much more roomy and would probably fit the carseat fine.

@BeachMama: do you just choose to put the car seat on passenger side or you have to because of the Prius's limitation?

@MamaMoose: hm. both actually. We live in a "city" where you can get anywhere within 15-20minutes. Sometimes it's on highway sometimes it's local.

I have a Prius and DH is 6'4". I was reall surprised at how roomy it is, and with how much I like it. However, with the infant carseat installed in the back, the seat has to be pushed almost all the way forward which means DH has to drive (carseat is on passenger side). It runs really smoothly though and actually has good pickup - I'm a fast driver.

We researched hybrids before buyin and the research says it takes somethig like 5-10 yrs to break even on gas savings va the premium you pay for a hybrids. DHs company gave us a hefty rebate for buying a hybrid which is the only reason we went with one.

Try it out but I have a feeling your husband won't be comfortable in the Prius. Do you primarily do highway driving or city driving? I have considered a hybrid in the past but all most all of my driving is highway driving and I was advised that when you are mostly on the highway you don't save enough gas over the life of the car to make up for the difference in the up front cost versus the non hybrid version of the same car.

Any of you have a hybrid?

We're not in the market right now but possibly within the year if not definitely within a year or two. We're leaning towards getting a hybrid for our next car because I think that's where the market is going and gas isn't dropping any time soon, if ever.

Which hybrid do you have and do you like it? I would like something that is spacious for a family of 3 + a mid size dog and in the future another baby. My husband is 6'3 so headroom is a must.

Seems like Toyota Prius is a popular one? Thanks!
