I agree with @sloaneandpuffy, you have to practice. My brain used to take FOREVER to shut off when I wanted to go to sleep, so when I downloaded the Hypnobabies Peaceful Sleep for Expectant Moms track, it took a while to get used to the idea of "deepening" and being totally relaxed. Once I got the hang of it, though, I found it really worked for me and made sleeping, and getting back to sleep after waking up to go to the bathroom a million times a night, come much quickly and much easier than it had been. I'm hoping now that I am a little more practiced in the relaxation techniques, that it will work perfectly for me during birth.

One other thought--for pain relief, I don't know if I would equate relaxation during menstrual cramps with the kind of anasthesia that is released during birthing. The important thing to remember is that when you are birthing, your body is naturally producing both hormones that soften and open your cervix, but also oxytocin, which has an anesthetic effect. One of the things that Hypnobirthing and Hypnobabies spend a lot of time talking about is the "powerful anesthesia" that is released with each pressure wave. I don't know that biologically that is happening when you have menstrual cramps.

And finally, when I was TTC, I found my (always painful) periods to be absolutely excruciating. It's like the pain was magnified by my emotional state, which was sometimes a wreck because I was lamenting the fact that I wasn't pregnant. So even if the relaxation isn't helping directly with the pain, if you're feeling the same stress that I did, I still think the relaxation techniques might help and have an indirect impact on the intensity of your cramps.

I hope you feel better soon!

I think you really have to practice.

At the same time, I don't think it's for everyone and I too had a very hard time, even with practice (I took a hypnobirthing class).

It didn't work for me either. I did think that it might work better if I do something physical and active before hand, like yoga, so I can work the thoughts out of my mind.

But as far as the cramps.... I have mind numbing cramps too and my doc put me on RX strength naproxen to be started two days before my period and straight through the end of it. It has really really helped so just something to consider.

Haha I have NO tips because this is EXACTLY how I would react. I have a really hard time shutting my brain off. This is why I lay awake at night making to lists for at least an hour before I can actually fall asleep : )

I've been researching the Hypnobabies method for natural pain-free birth, and became very interested in the idea. I downloaded one of their tracks "Relax Me" that's made to be used anytime, not specifically for birth.

Today I started my period, which for me means mind-numbing cramps beyond imagination. I took some Midol (but it doesn't numb them completely, just takes the edge off), and thought that maybe this would be a good time to try out the "Relax Me" track. My thought process was - if this completely relaxes my muscles, wouldn't it make the cramps subside and help me rest?

So I tried it. I laid down, got comfortable, and started listening. I did my best to follow the instructions and relax, but it just wasn't working! She would tell me to count back from 100 and that by the time I got to 97 the numbers would completely melt away and I would go deeper into relaxation.

I tried. I really did. But when I got to 97 I was like, no, I still have numbers... 96, 95, 94, 93 STILL HERE!!!!

Then she says to pick a special word, something that makes me feel happy and calm and good.
I'm like "Ok, let's see. Ice cream! Burritos! Spring Rolls! Coffee! Wait, maybe it shouldn't be a food. This is silly. How about library? Taco Bell? Shoes? No? Um... I still think it should be burritos. I would love a burrito right now. Oooh, a Chipotle burrito. Wait, I'm supposed to be hypnotizing myself! Ommmmm... *burritos* Nommmm"

Ugh... this is SO not working. Any tips on how to get out of my obnoxious brain and actually make this thing work for me?
