@T.H.O.U.: they monitored my thyroid levels monthly during my pregnancy but I never needed an increased dose of thyroid. I will continue to take it for the rest of my life most likely, especially while trying to conceive but it's no big deal. Oh and I have a perfectly happy, healthy lo so there was no effect to him either.

@marionberry: I have hypothyroidism (Hashimotos) and only went on medication when I got prego. The standard now is to keep your TSH level under 2.5 while prego. 3.9 isn't high at all and my guess is that your doc wouldn't put you on meds unless it got higher and/or you got prego. Also I carried my son (born 10 days ago) to 39w & 6d. He's perfectly healthy and happy :)

American thyroid association guidelines recommend a TSH below 2.5 in women trying to conceive and who become pregnant. Maybe they could recheck it sooner?

Just an update, when I went back in after my BFP my thryoid had gone down to 2.59 but the RE wants it below 2.5 so he put me on a low dose synthetic thryoid and I get checked next week (it's been a month) on the progress. It doesn't seem like a big deal.

@travelgirl1: That is GREAT news and exactly what I was looking to hear. Thank you!

I called and asked my RE about why they didn't put me on meds right away. They said sometimes it can be a fluke (since I've never been tested before) so they'll test me again at the start of my next period and if the levels are still up they'll put me on meds and then monitor the dosages.

I was diagnosed with it a few days after my bfp and have been on medication ever since. Baby girl is gorgeous and healthy and it was kept well under control during pregnancy, I just had a monthly blood test and the dosage was increased accordingly. Don't worry, it shouldn't cause you any problems.

I think thyroid issues are also related to high estrogen and egg quality issues.

@shutterbug: That's a good point and may be why my RE didn't automatically put me on meds (given I still have normal ovulation) but I agree that I need to get this in check and it needs to be monitored closely once I'm pregnant. Does anyone know if RE's do any monitoring after you get pregnant? Or do you then transition to an OB/GYN?

FWIW, my endocrinologist said she didn't think my 3.8 TSH was what was keeping me from getting pregnant. I also think that whether or not you were on thyroid meds already, you'd need your levels monitored and your dosage changed once you found out you were pregnant.

@travelbrit, @mrs.someone: Thank you so much for your words of wisdom, I look forward to talking to my provider and hopefully getting him to put me on some thyroid medication.

I don't think you need to be worried about loosing a baby so early on (levels fluctuate during pregnancy anyway), but I also don't think your levels will just go down on their own enough in a month. For reference, I think I was at around 3 when I went on meds and was only once below 2 after being on 50mg of synthorid. And I just got my meds increased the other day but am continuing to TTC.

I wouldnt worry too much. 3.9 isnt really very high. I think 4 or 5 unused to be considered normal but then the range got narrowed.

My hypothyroid was medicated at the beginning of my pregnancy but somewhere along the way my levels jumped through the roof.

Lo is very healthy. Perhaps try to push to have your levels checked again in two weeks but I wouldn't worry too much.

At my cd3 testing yesterday I found out that my TSH levels were too high indicating hypothyroidism 3.9). The nurse who called said we'd just check it again in a month. We're intending to do an IUI this cycle and given what I've researched I'm a bit freaked out that they didn't put me on thyroid meds right away. I'm worried that I could get pregnant and lose the baby because I'm not on meds.

I'm going to call the doctor's office tomorrow to talk to them about it, but I was wondering if anyone was diagnosed with hypothyroidism right before getting pregnant or during pregnancy? If so, what were the effects? Did you carry a healthy baby to term? All of the comments I've seen are from people who've been diagnosed for awhile. Thanks!
