@parkerhaus: the last time I had it tested was after O by a few days, since my O day is usually a little later than most. I'm beginning to figure this out! Hopefully when I get it tested at the end of the month my numbers look good.

@mrs.halfsie: At what point in your cycle did you have your progesterone values tested? It should be approximately 7DPO. If they were tested at other times you could still have low progesterone which is common with Hypothyroid. The thyroid impacts everything.

@mrs.halfsie: I guess once your thyroid values regulate, if you're still spotting you'll know it wasn't related to the thyroid. It may just take some time to find out.

@marionberry: I've done all sorts of searches and asked all sorts of doctors, and while it seems like a lot of women suffer from the same thing, there really aren't many answers out there. Most doctors have just told me some spotting is normal and brushed it off, but my current doctor said it could be related to my thyroid. This is my first month on thyroid meds so I was hoping it would go away, but it's back again!

@mrs.halfsie: I never had any spotting before my period, despite my hypothyroidism, although my hypo is minor. I agree with spaniellove that spotting is usually due to progesterone. I wonder if you do a simple google search if you can find out what other hormones might be affecting it?

@spaniellove: That's what my ND originally thought, but my Progesterone levels have come back fine each time I've had them tested. I wouldn't say it's major spotting though, it's just really strange brown/black discharge - ick.

@mrs.halfsie: I have Hashimoto's so hypothyroid also. I didn't encounter spotting ever before my period, but if I was not on BC my cycle would get get shorter each month until I was back to getting a period every other week, a full 7 days and very heavy.

Sorry that probably wasn't really helpful, but maybe one of these other ladies can offer some advice. I know thyroid issues can play a role on your cycles so it is possible that your spotting is from your thyroid.

Hello there! I realize this post is a bit old, but I just had some questions if any of you are still around :)

Did any of you encounter spotting the week before your period? Did that ever stop when you got put on meds? If you were able to get pregnant, did the bleeding still occur that cycle or did nothing happen?

Thanks - I'm a hypothyroid newbie so any info is appreciated!

@marionberry: I'm so glad you posted this, thank you!

My TSH came back at 5.05 which my doc said he wouldn't normally treat but because I was newly prego he also out me on levothyroxin/synthroid. I haven't gotten the results of my latest test back yet, but I'm assuming I'm somewhere around 2.5, because he hasn't called me with a new Rx.

I hate having to remember to take that silly little pill first thing each AM!

I just came came from my endo and she said wants me to call her the second I get a BFP, even if it is the weekend and before the OB/GYN! At which point they would start taking a monthly thyroid panel and my medication may need to be adjusted.

@ParkerHaus: Thank you for posting that. Great reference to have for the future!

My first TSH was 5 and a week later was 7.2 but after the meds kicked in I think they remained stable at around 2. They had to switch up the dosage a few times but it never caused a problem and by a week pp I didn't need meds anymore.

@marionberry: Actually .44 is fine for pregnancy. The endocrinologist association suggests .5-2.5 normally but during pregnancy the limits change because pregnancy naturally has an effect on your TSH. The following is copied directly from the reference range from my last TSH results (I am currently pregnant)

First trimester 0.26-2.66
Second trimester 0.55-2.73
Third trimester 0.43-2.91

As for me, my levels have bounced around - as low as .41 and as high as 1.91- all within range for the trimester that I am in. Hope that helps.

@marionberry: yes my endo doesn't want above 2.5-3, but ideally 1.0 which does make sense. Your levothyroxine dose might be too high? I was put on 75 µg and luckily that was the magic number and it never needed adjusted....some people also do better with a combination hormone of T3 and T4 instead of strictly T4. A call to the doctor never hurts so glad to see that you already have that in motion! Good luck!

@anbanan15: That is the older range too. Since 2008 they want everyone to be from .3 to 3.0. Most doctors still use the old range though, I've found out. So glad that your hypothyroidism is in check now. I can't imagine how you must have felt at 44.45!

@marionberry: Yes he was an idiot lol. That was who my OB/GYN sent me to (the found a goiter on my yearly) and after leaving his office bailing to them they took over my care. They actually said I could not go another day without any medication and I have to say I think they were right...I was non-functioning (I thought it was normal new baby tiredness).

Anyway I'm glad you see an RE and they should be able to help you. It takes forever to get into an endo around here and they only take certain cases (so glad I go into one, but I guess my case was bad enough to be worthy lol), so already have an RE is awesome! FWIW the reference range that comes back on my lab results is 0.34-5.60 uIU/mL, but I feel the 5.60 is on the very high range of normal, if even normal.

@anbanan15: Wow can't believe your ENT thought those levels were normal. Right now I'm at the end of being seen by my reproductive endocrinologist and transitioning tomorrow to my OB. I called the RE's office today (I haven't heard back yet) because I know that he will know what I should be doing while pregnant with my TSH way more than my OB will. I would think a level of 1.0 is best during pregnancy too because it's a happy medium.

I'm not pregnant right now, but I was diagnosed post pregnancy with a TSH of 44.45. After starting levothyroxine my levels dropped to 3.84 three weeks later and I have leveled off between 1-1.19. My endo wants me to remain around 1.0 during my child bearing years, although I'm not exactly sure what she will recommend when I am pregnant again.

Are you seen by an endo or ENT? I was originally managed by my OB/GYN and then family doctor, but my endo's office said they don't always understand thyroid levels (an ENT I was sent to said there was nothing wrong with me with a TSH of 44.45, so they don't always know either!).
