@travelingbrit: We have had it for 13 months now and it has given us an average of 25 mpg city- highway is around 30mpg, but we don't do much highway.

The air conditioner takes a big toll on mileage, closer to 21 mpg for most of the summer... but we are in Phoenix with 100 days over 100 degrees.

Seriously give it a test drive, it is the best car!

@travelingbrit: Actually, we test drove a 2012 demo car. We could have gotten a really good deal on it but it just didn't impress.

We got an 2013 Equinox that has pretty good gas mileage. I think it's 32 highway and 22 city with an average of 26. Although, compared to my previous car, that's amazing!

We were also looking at the 2013 Ford Escapes but I don't like the new remodel.

@lemondrop: Subaru Hadn't even crossed my mind until earlier today when I saw it was rated #1 on consumer reports. Is th 25 mpg mostly highway, or city?

I hate the whole car shopping process!

We test drove the Honda CRV, the Toyota Rav 4, the Hyundai Santa Fe and Tucson, and the Subaru Forester.

I couldn't see the spedometer on the Rav 4, and the salesman wouldn't tell me what was in the "desert package".

I couldn't see well out of the rear view mirror with both the Hyundai's, but loved them otherwise.

The CRV was our runner up, but I wasn't a fan of how the console looked.

And Goldilocks really liked the Forester, so that is what we bought. It just felt like a perfect fit for us. I LOVE that car! We get about 25 mpg.

My in-laws are looking at buying the cx-5, so next month I'll get to take that one for a spin!

@MUI831: hmmm I'm guessing you test drove th 2013 ?

I don't know much about the equinox. Our primary concern is gas mileage. Test drove the Mazda cx5 tonight. It was decent. Lacking a little in power, but it's supposed to be the best fuel efficiency in its class.

Our original top pick was the Sante Fe but when we test drove it, we didn't love it. I can't really say why. There was nothing really wrong with it. Although, perhaps some of the issue might have been that the sales guy we talked to seemed to not want to sell us a car. He was very unenthusiastic. We ended up going with a Chevy Equinox. Only had it a few days but already took it on its first road trip and love it.

I have a Hyundai Sonata (2002) and it is such a great little car, that when we buy my new car early next year we are keeping it. The Santa Fe made my short list of cars to look at as well, just because of how great the Sonata has been. The gas mileage isn't too bad either. I still get between 23-27 mpg.

So from my experience I can tell you that if you do the upkeep you should have little-no problems. My biggest problems so far have been our fault but the air conditioner went out, and we had to replace the power steering system. The air conditioner started off as a little problem, but in trying to find/fix it we created a bigger problem. The power steering was because my 18 year old brother thought he was driving a race car and took a turn too fast.

DH thinks it is realively easy to work on...but having small hands avalible are key. There is not a whole lot of room to work in. The parts are not outrageously priced either and most are avalible at AutoZone. Some parts are even cheaper at the dealership. Overall its a great car, and he looks forward to when its his "Dad" car.

HTH

@MamaMoose: My mom has a Sonata and her hubs has a 2011 Santa Fe and they are super happy with them. I owned a 2007 Hyundai Elantra and loved it.

The Santa Fe was my first choice, just based on the fact I've driven one before and liked it - but I know it underwent a redesign for 2013. Good to know they are happy with it. My 2007 Hyundai got better gas mileage than my 2012 Kia so that's another vote in that direction too.

My parents just bough a 2013 Santa Fe, and they are super happy with it! My father is super smart and someone who LOVES research. So, given that he bought one I can tell you that it must be an excellent car and that it must be very well priced. He used to always drive Acuras or Volvos but they recently just decided it wasn't worth the money to keep driving expensive cars and they bought a Hyundai Sonata last year and a Santa Fe this year and love them both.

We're heading off tomorrow to look at new cars. After a lot of research, our top two picks are the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe or the 2013 Mazda CX-5. The third contender is the Honda CRV.

We're not really in the best position financially to be getting a new car, but SO's car is on it's last legs. It currently has about $6K in trade in value, but if anything mechanical goes wrong we'll lose out on that.

So - Anyone have any comments about those cars?
Also we are thinking about leasing as we are hoping to move out of the country within the next three years. Any tips on leasing?
