I love being healthy and DH is on board with it too now! It was a big change when we made the new years resolution to eat better. We cut out beef (turkey instead) and no processed food. I haven't had any pop, candy or chocolate either! <--DH isn't so good about the no pop and candy... YAY for HEALTHY eating!

@mrbee: I am thinking that is probably my problem. I eat very healthy but probably a bit too much of everything. Well, I started a food journal to track exactly what I am consuming so I can figure this out!

@Andrea: I was definitely overeating before, so I kinda had to eat less. But it's definitely not like I'm walking around hungry.

I think maybe also we've all just gotten used to bigger meals, and so normal meals sound tiny!

@Andrea: My lunches are actually really hearty! I guess fiber fills you up in a way that other stuff doesn't? Who knew.

Anyway I always make sure to have plenty of protein. I started off eating a lot of TON of protein for lunch, but lowered it over time when I realized to my surprise that I no longer craved it as much as I used to. Weird.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I eat at a deli salad bar... I just grab stuff from there. Sometimes I'm so busy with work that I don't have time to eat! Then I do what every diet book recommends; skip lunch and eat a bigger dinner.

We are trying to make some diet adustments too! I just started buying organic hormone free milk (i'm slow on the bandwagon!). We pretty much NEVER eat red meat unless we are at someone's house and would be rude not to. We only eat chicken and ground turkey. I'm trying to work in more whole grains - and I'm determined to start using quinoa!

@mrbee: How are you able to keep it together when you're on the go? When I put my mind to it (still working on that this time around ...) I am able to eat halfway decent at home. But when I travel, it's all over!

I've made little changes recently. I switched from coffee to tea (less caffeine) and I use honey instead of sugar. I also decided to ban drinking out of plastic bottles. If I need something portable, I buy a small glas drink (snapple or something), clean it out and fill it up with water.

I've always shunned trans fats and processed foods, but I started eating more veggies as well recently. Salad has become more of a main course for me at dinner, and I've been expanding the stuff I put in it (healthy things).

It's hard to eat well on a budget during the day though. Packing a salad for lunch at work just isn't feasible. The best I can do is a healthy sandwich. And I need to eat more fruit, I can go several weeks without eating a single serving!

DH and I are trying to get healthier too! Part of the problem is that he and I were both raised on meat and potatoes diets and that's what we are used to. Also, I'm an awful cook. We aren't used to/don't like a lot of foods, especially DH, so it's hard to change my meal planning to healthier meals. I'm better for lunch and breakfast, but dinners are hard. Also we are at my in-laws a lot, and they eat meat, potatoes, and junk food, so that really hurts the efforts we make during the week to be healthier.

Anyway, I've been running, biking and doing some Jillian Michael's DVDs. I'm trying to make smoothies for breakfast each day with frozen fruit, yogurt, V8 splash and spinach. I try to stick to sandwiches or healthier soups for lunch. I've been trying to increase my veggie intake by snacking on green beans, peppers and snap peas when I want something crunchy.

It's working slowly, but surely. I'm down 9 pounds since Christmas.

@Andrea: Sure!

Breakfast: Fiber One with berries and 1% milk (Or, Oatmeal from a deli if I'm in a hurry).
Lunch: A lot of salady stuff, with a little protein (tofu, fish or chicken) thrown in. Salad items chosen for high fiber content.
Dinner: Sadly usually just a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread.

The big change is that I rarely if ever eat (or have a craving for) red meat. Also my portions are much smaller, I guess b/c the fiber fills me up. I lost another pound this morning, so I'm almost ten pounds down.

I think though that I'm overdoing it on the fiber. I am going to try and tone it down a bit.

My husband and I are already very health concious, we dont drink soda, caffeine, or alcohol. We dont eat shelled sea food and for the last few weeks have also cut out beef. I plan to cut out all red meat eventually.
The areas I have to improve is drink more fluids, cut down on sugary snacks (chocolate), and eat more fresh fruit and veggies.

DH & I are right there with you. After both of us being in the best shape of our last year around our wedding, we fell off the bandwagon and let the honeymoon phase fatten us up and got lazy with working out.

In fact, DH & I haven't worked out regularly since April! The summer kept us pretty active outdoors, but since last week, we are both trying to get back to our normal 3-4x workout regiment. DH has been doing really well with it, I still need a kick in the butt.

I'm on the healthy bandwagon (most of the time, ahem) at the moment. Having lost 16 kg (35lbs) in the last year, I just have 8 kg (17lbs) to go before my doc is happy with my weight as optimum for TTC. One of the things I find incredibly hard is getting enough water! I agree with you on the fibre being amazing!

I have to exercise, that's really the only thing that will make a difference at this point. I generally follow those rules plus limit sun exposure, alcohol and exposure to second hand smoke. I also moisturize like it is going out of style. I got my make up done a few months ago and the artist thought I was in my late 20's, which is a huge compliment, since I am 36!

Since I have been pregnant, I have been exercising more, and trying to eat healthier (even though morning sickness and pregnancy cravings are my enemies in that). I have been making small changes over the past few years as well (switching to whole wheat instead of white flour, swapping out soda for water or fruit juice, etc). I find that making one small change at a time is easier for me than a diet overhaul would be.

I am very health/nutrition conscious and follow most of those guidelines as best I can already. I drink lots of water and no soda. One thing I also do now is NOT drink milk. I drink Original flavor Silk Pure Almond "milk" and I don't miss the whole milk I used to drink at all. Ideally I'd cut out all dairy products, but I'm addicted to sharp cheddar cheese and eat it every now and then on black beans or on broccoli. I also am too much in love with mozzarella to give it up. I hardly ever eat eggs (unless they are in a cookie or cake and I'm splurging) :)

I drink milk or water before anything else.
I haven't been able to cut cola out of my diet, but I have significantly less than I ever used to.

I am trying to drink more water. I really don't like water, at all, but know that it is good for me (and baby) so I am trying! Being pregnant makes me think more about what I am eating, and I hope that after pregnancy I will still think about it.

1. Eat at least 30 grams of fiber a day.
2. Consume 4 to 5 cups of colorful fruits and vegetables a day.
3. Reduce saturated fat and shun trans fats.
4. Choose healthy omega-3 fats.
5. Substitute whole grains for highly processed, refined foods.
6. Seek out foods rich in calcium and magnesium.
7. Hydrate. (Eight cups of water a day).
8. Save room for a healthy dessert.
9. Watch your portion sizes.
10. Select healthy snacks. (Fruits, vegetables, and nuts).

It's been about a week and so far, so good. I basically have stopped reading red meat, and am eating mostly fish and chicken. But even those meat portions are less than what I used to eat, and I eat a lot of fruits and veggies every day. Plus fiber up the wazoo.

The biggest learning for me has been that fiber really does fill you up! Also, eating healthy makes you not crave meaty foods. In fact, a lot of meals I used to enjoy now disgust me. That's probably a good thing in the long run, but it did make me a bit sad at first.

Anyone else working on getting healthy?
