@Bluebonnet: @Mrs. Sketchbook: On my side of the family, we also don't exchange gifts for adults anymore, and it is pretty awesome! We just do gifts for the kids. So much more relaxing. We still do gifts for DH's side, but his siblings aren't married and don't have kids, so it's not really that many gifts anyway. I totally understand about not being able to relax at home. That's how I've felt this whole year.

I read this article at the beginning of December and it really resonated with me and I'm actively trying to say no to some holiday things so I can be more in the moment with my little family. http://www.vitafamiliae.com/to-the-mamas-of-littles-during-the-holidays/ It's tough to balance!

Hope your holiday ends up being cheery!

@TemperanceBrennan: Do you have a Paper Source near you? They carry 4-bar envelopes. Randomly, my local art supply carries a variety of envelope sizes too.

I also love this time of year, but my to do list is so overwhelming at the moment, its hard to be joyous. I'm trying to do my best to scale back and not compare my decorations, Christmas treats, or anything else to years past. I'm having moderate success. I'm hopeful I'll feel better after my Christmas cards finally get mailed, the last present is purchased, and everything is wrapped and under the tree.

@Bluebonnet: I completely agree about Thanksgiving being late. It is throwing off my whole groove htis year. I usually love this time of year, but this year it's been tough. Not only was Thanksgiving early this year, but we celebrated Christmas with our families this past weekend, so that made it feel even more crunched. We also did the same thing that you did - Christmas for the kids, not the adults. At least, that's what Hubs and I thought. Then we get to Hubs' family and his 2 brothers both bought gifts for his parents, and we didn't, so he felt like a huge a-hole. Urrrgh... We are spending Chistmas Eve and Christmas Day just the 3 of us, having breakfast and watching Harry Potter movies all day, and I.CAN'T.WAIT.

@TemperanceBrennan: Yes yes and more yes. Trying to make this gift and I have cut an 8x10 picture wrong twice, so now going back to the store to get the THIRD one once LO is done with his nap. Since it is a pic of me and LO, I am sure the person behind the counter is like, WTF is up with this woman who has to have a million 8x10s of herself? Or is only gifting the same 8x10 to everyone she knows?

The thing about Christmas is....I know that it isn't necessary to do all this stuff, but then everyone else is doing it, so then I feel like I HAVE to, lest I look like a total jerk. And if I am going to do it, then I feel like I have to do it well, so then I end up putting so much stress onto the whole thing.

Ugh, it sucks. You're post made me feel better because I know someone else is feeling the same way.

My rant:
I cannot find f-ing 4-bar (A-1) envelopes anywhere. We weren't even going to cards this year, but I found a really cute printable and got them printed at a local print shop on a whim. I called four stores looking for the envelopes (no luck) and went to three stores. At the last stationary store I was helped by a clueless employee that didn't realize there were different sizes of envelopes. I was convinced they had them, so I searched every aisle. I finally found some in the right size and bought them and drove home, only to find out they aren't envelopes, but just blank pieces of paper. I guess I have to use one size up, and they just look silly.

Even though I had been making list of possible presents for everyone since October, my husband and I got in a fight last night because we couldn't agree on what to get everyone. It was the last day to get guaranteed free shipping by Christmas for a lot of things, but he decided to go to bed instead because he had to get up early.

I have put a ton of pressure to get my parents something special and meaningful since this is the first Christmas I won't be spending with them. I couldn't come up with anything, so I got them boring presents that probably won't even get there until after Christmas.

Our tree has three ornaments on it, half of the lights are burnt out and there are no other decorations in the house. (I typically go all out decorating).

I have to make three photo books tonight that I have zero motivation for.

The house is a mess and DH has had a cold for the past week that he constantly complains about.

I haven't baked anything yet and people are asking for treats.

Just found out that instead of spending Christmas day in our pjs watching movies, we will be spending all. freaking. day. (and night) with my in-laws.

The worst part is that I really love Christmas and this time of year, but this year sucks.

I'm ready for it to be 2014.

End rant. I'm in a bad mood today.

Thanksgiving was so late this year, so I feel like everything has been crammed into a shorter period of time, which makes a hectic time of year even more frantic.

I'm also over giving and receiving gifts. I don't "need" anything, and most of the people I'm "supposed" to buy things for don't "need" anything either. My siblings and parents came to an agreement this year that adults don't exchange gifts anymore and Christmas is all about the kids. Which makes it a zillion times more enjoyable. I'm nudging DH to make the same deal with his family.

A few friends and I have long ago stopped exchanging Christmas gifts and instead do something fun together - mani/pedi, lunch, etc.

I agree - the best present would be time with my family with nothing to do. I'm hoping things will slow down considerably between Christmas and New Years!

Oh yeah I am a Scrooge. Though Christmas is a little more fun for me this year since I had LO. But still. I hate the crowds. I hate the snowbirds that come here. I hate trying to find gifts for people who won't tell me what they want. I hate that my husband is the worst gift giver. I put in a lot of effort this year for his Christmas gifts. Today he calls and says well I was going to get you a new phone and a new diaper bag. Is that ok? I'm thrilled to be getting these things but it's like... Just do it and don't ask me or tell me beforehand...

I hate Christmas. I always have. I love buying presents and watching them get opened and of course getting them (though I don't get any anymore) but I hate everything else.

Anyone else there with me? Finishing up the last of the gifts I decided to make, and one or two of them are just not turning out right. My house is a mess, I have events/gatherings that I don't want to go to planned for the next three days...and then comes all the cooking and the packing. WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS? I wish I could just go to everyone and say STOP IT NOW! STOP ALL OF THIS AWFUL STUFF!

I feel like I am just going through the motions of everything. All the things that are supposed to feel fun feel like a chore. I love to cook, love to craft, etc., but all of it crammed into December....I'm just totally over it.

I'm also totally over gifts. Totally over giving them and receiving them as well. Right now, the best gift I could ever get would be an afternoon with no obligations, with my immediate family and no-one else. That is such a rarity this time of year, and I don't know why.

I am looking forward to Christmas Day through January 4. My husband will have some time off and we are going to visit both sides of my family. I can loosen up when I am around my family. I live close to my ILs and have many friends here, but I can never get comfortable enough around those people to truly enjoy the holidays with them. Plus, I will be away from the house, which is great because whenever I am at home, all I can think about is how everything is a mess and I am behind on everything I need to do.

I feel like I am an adult now that Christmas has officially become a drag.
