yeah, that sounds co-incidental to the trip, rather than caused by it! my LO went through a phase like that big time.

@swurlygurl: I go out of town one night a week for work. I think it was about that time that my LO stared figuring things out and having a harder time with it. Like, she knew if she wasn't picked up by 4pm at daycare I wasn't coming home that night, and she started crying and waiting by the door at daycare around 4pm, but only on the days I was out of town.
I think you are right- your LO was just ready to make that developmental leap and it happened at a time when there were a lot of new things going on. Doesn't make it easier, though. Hope she settles in soon!

@swurlygurl: So I took a toddler parenting class this past weekend and one of the big takeaways was that toddlers' emotions are often too big for their bodies. They don't know how to regulate their emotions hence the tantrums and emotional freak outs.

Sounds like it was just a lot for your LO to take in and she's feeling overwhelmed.

The other big takeaway from the class was that toddlers need routine, attachment and 'pressure valves' (times to let out all those feelings) built into their days and that, any time your toddler is feeling sad/mad/out-of-sorts/whatever you should gather them up, hold them, reflect back the facts, but don't project emotions on them (e.g. "I see you crying. I am here for you.").

I'm sure she'll be back to herself very soon, but it sounds like she might just be feeling overwhelmed and doesn't know how to manage it. Don't blame yourself, mama!

@lizzywiz: 16 months

@Grace: Oh man, I would think you'd be fine! Most babies travel just fine, I have no idea what happened this time. I wonder if it's because DH didn't go with us, and she only had one constant?

Also, I think she had *just* been starting a clingy phase - the previous week she had started crying at daycare drop off which was new for her. So, this trip must have exacerbated her clinginess, maybe... grasping for straws... haha

@Madison43: That's what I'm really hoping for. She's been sleeping a lot more these last 2 days, and I'm really hoping she just needs a boring week to reset. Poor girl, it's so sad to watch her get so upset

We just travelled 2 weekends in a row (one flight and one long road trip) and homegirl was a mess for several days. I just let her sleep on demand - she's 7 1/2 months and has taken 4 naps each day for the past 3 days - and today, she finally seemed better. I bet she's just overtired and out of sorts.

I recently took a weekend trip to visit my parents, L and I flew by ourselves Friday - Monday. Before the trip she was seriously the best baby ever. So laid back, can play by herself, not bothered when other kids takes her toys so she just moves on to the next toy, loves strangers, LOVES other kids...

After the first flight out there though, *everything* changed! She is SO anxious, clingy, scared and whiny now. The whole trip I couldn't leave her alone for two seconds (my poor parents, they couldn't even hold her when I needed to use the bathroom). If someone even dared look at her wrong, it was the start of a major melt-down (more scared than temper tantrum-y), and she didn't even like any of the babies and kids that were around! One baby that was a little younger than her was trying to play with a toy with her and she started crying and clawing for me.

I was just chalking it up to her being scared with all the new stimuli and people, and that when we got back home she'd be back to normal.

Well, we've been home for 2.5 days now, and it's just as bad :( She's slightly scared of DH, and she was big-time Daddy's girl before. The little dog at daycare that she's grown up with (spends more time with the dog than with me!) makes her scream bloody murder every time she sees her. The BABY at daycare that she's known her whole life touched her foot while laying on the floor and L freaked out and turned into a big scared-y mess :( And then there's just a whole bunch of other small things.

I know it's only been a couple days, and she probably (hopefully...) just needs to reset her schedule and her surroundings. Anyone else go through this though? Her daycare provider was even so sad and worried for her, because she is acting so broken :crying:
