@IcebergMom: Thanks for that! Makes me feel a lot better about not going to the doctor. I figured that was the case but it's good to hear it confirmed.

Ouch! My husband is a doc and they don't do much for broken toes unless it's coming out of the skin! :( so I wouldn't worry/stress yourself out getting to a clinic until it's convenient. Hang in there. Bring everythig to the one level as soon as you can!!

@Arden: Just Google'd it real quick and it looks like there's something called a "Steady Step Walking Boot" sold at places like Wal-Mart, so it's worth checking other pharmacies!

Ouch! I hope you feel better soon, and can get to a doctor to have it looked at. Can you give Vi something safe that she's not normally allowed, so she'd sit and play for a while? Or take her outside if they have a yard?

If it's just a broken toe, tying it to another toe with a scrunchie or tape might keep it in place so it can start healing...

oh no! That sucks! Maybe you can keep a station of everything you need downstairs for the time being? So you don't have to go up and down stairs? Sorry to hear this mama!

@Arden: Do you know anyone who has broken their foot in the past and might still have the boot lying around? A stabilizing boot is a stabilizing boot, so even if you could just borrow one, that would work. I did that once when was between jobs with no insurance and had a stress fracture in a metatarsal...

@rachiecakes: Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I really don't want to pay a couple of hundred dollars to hear "Well, we'll tape it up and you should keep off your feet." I don't think there's a lot to be done. :(

Yup. No fun.
When I got my wisdom teeth out in October it was the worst ever. My jaw was broken a bit to get them out and the swelling so severe I could hardly open my mouth never mind talk, eat, etc. I wasn't expecting recovery to be as bad as it was, so I didn't have any childcare lined up.
DS spent a lot of time on the iPad and curled up watching movies with me.

I hope you feel better!
Unless it's metatarsal or a really bad break, and even then, they don't really do much other than tell you to stay off your feet :bummed:

@blackbird: Yeah she's walking but this would actually be easier if she wasn't! Haha. :P We're currently staying at my grandparents and it isn't babyproofed at all, so I have to chase her around to keep her safe. :/

Can you get to a nighttime clinic tonight to at least get it x-rayed?

Is Vi walking? If not, this would be a great time for her to learn  But in all seriousness, i would do everything on the floor. diaper changes, etc, so that you don't have to walk around with her on you. and obviously keeping your foot elevated will help with the swelling

I put arnica on it to help with the swelling/bruising (putting it on was SO painful even though I was being super gentle) but it's still pretty swollen.

@blackbird: DH is at work until 7 and I have no family around other than my grandparents who aren't currently home, and who can't really help me anyway. They have poor balance so they can't carry Vi around either.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Yeah I'm thinking a boot might help stabilize it enough to not hurt quite as much. :(

Can you see a doctor? If it's "just" a toe that's broken you could probably wrap it to minimize pain on impact, but if it's your foot that's broken, you might need a boot to stabilize it so it can heal. Plus with a boot you'd be able to "walk" on it.

I thought I broke my for last fall but X-rays showed it was a contusion. My whole foot was swollen and my toe was crooked.

I got a blue shoe boot. It was awkward but felt 10000x better than putting on any other kind of shoe.

Ibuprofen and ice helped with the pain/swelling and I made sure to elevate my foot when possible.

It took a good two weeks for everything to be fine again. The shoe, as awkward as it was, was my saving grace. It kept my foot and toes stabilized, especially when walking.

Being a SAHM when you can't walk is not easy. I have to hop on one foot (even that hurts because of the jarring) because if I put any weight at all on my injured foot (even if it's on my heel) makes tears come to my eyes. This sucks.

I just had to go downstairs by putting Vi on my back and scooting down on my butt because I couldn't hop down.

Ahhh! Have you ever had to care for a child alone while injured? Any tips or tricks to make this work?
