DS does this sometimes. He melts himself to the floor and repeats that he can't. I find it happens when he is tired or doesn't want to do something.

No advice on how to deal with it, just commiseration.

Recently my daughter said she couldn't get dressed for school without assistance. I told her fine then I guess you can't put on dress up clothes either so I should get rid of those. Maybe say the same thing about a bike or toy?

Hm...could you try saying "can you skip, then?" or something along those lines? Try to turn it into a game.

Or get down on his/her level, give a hug, and say "I need you to be a big boy/girl and walk as far as XXX, and then I can carry you?"

Or, depending on how contrary your child is, could you say something like "oh, I know. Only big boys/girls can walk across a parking lot THIS big." Something like that...?

DS1 only does this on rare occasions (once a month or so), so I usually indulge.

Can you use a baby carrier? If they protest, tell them once they are able/willing to show you they can walk, you'll be using it?

My kid did this outside Petsmart, while my arms were full. Ugh. Endlessly frustrating. But, I had to totally act like it didn't bother me at all, or else she would have done it 100 more times.

This stage has lasted on and off for almost a year now for us! I'm 33 weeks pregnant now and it's getting really hard to carry her whenever it suits her whim 🙄

No advice but we are going through the same thing with DS1 who is nearing 28 months. He used to love walking and now wants to be carried everywhere - in the house, outside, at daycare. What's amusing is when his daycare teacher saw his behavior, she was surprised.

My kids have started a super frustrating phase (yes, both of them) where they claim they can't walk. They do it at super inconvenient times, like when my hands are full and we are walking across a parking lot. My youngest has been doing it more than my oldest, and lately I've been having to carry her down the halls at my older LO's school, carrying all of my other LO's stuff, and carrying her all the way back out to the car. Of course I could just say I'm not carrying her, but avoiding a screaming meltdown in front of people, or in the middle of a cold/snowy/busy parking lot sounds better to me.

Has anyone gone through this stage? Any tips?
