@gingerbebe: I've been doing a version of this too! Not with the siblings because DS is still too young, but if Noelle and her friend is playing and can't share properly after some fair warning, I'll take the toy away so nobody gets it. I think it makes total sense!

Yup, we did this too. There were 5 of us though, and the cutter always got last pick - huge incentive for very equal pieces! I will absolutely do this with my boys.

My mom did something different. If we ever fought over something she considered a treat or privilege, she would throw it away or destroy it. Period. I remember one time she bought a huge bag of twin pops as a summer treat and told us we could share one before dinner. We bickered over what FLAVOR to eat - we didn't even get to the splitting part - and she immediately grabbed the bag of popsicles, bashed them into smithereens in the backyard with a baseball bat, and then hosed down the patio. The end. Sounds harsh, but my brother and I learned fast to never fight over treats or no one got anything.

My brother and I were 4 years apart, so my mom didn't feel like 50/50 was a reasonable way to handling sharing. Instead, she would tell me that I was the oldest, so I should try and look out for my little brother's interests since he was a little guy and she would tell my brother that he should show respect and honor to me as his elder. In that way, we were supposed to learn to be generous towards each other.

I don't think my parents had any neat tricks like this. I was younger than my brother by 13 years, so no sharing problems there and about the same gap between any of my cousins. So no tricks were needed, really..

My Mom always made my sister and I do this! It really did work well!

Back in the (bad) old days, when kids were allowed to ride in the front seat of the car, Mom also used to strictly enforce a front seat rotation- I'd get to sit in front on the way out, and Sis would get the front on the return.

This switching is so ingrained into us that we recently realized that we STILL do this unconsciously, 20+ years later!

We used to do this after our sharing got out of hand (totally unequal). We obviously liked it because we would dk it when our parents weren't even there. No one wanted to be the cutter incase a mistake was made and often the kitchen scales were brought out!

We did this too!

On long car trips, our parents gave us each a roll of quarters. Every time we asked "how much longer / when will we be there?" we had to give them back one of the quarters from our roll. We got to keep the quarters we had left at the end of the trip, so it was a good way to keep us from asking the annoying questions!

I was talking with my mom today about how this is the parenting "trick" I remember most from my childhood. Anytime me and my sister had to share something (my mom would have one of us cut/pour/divide the item, and the other got first choice of which portion we wanted. I remember painstakingly making sure that when we shared a can of pop that those levels were perfectly even, or each half of the cookie was either exactly equal in size, slightly off, but one side appeared to have more chocolate chips. Now as an adult, I think it's quite clever, since we rarely fought about who's share was better, since the cutter always believed the pieces were equal and the chooser got to pick what they considered better, so nobody could really be upset.

Do you guys do this with your kids? Do you have any parenting methods that you distinctly remember from your own childhood?
