I find the show fascinating and disturbing. I think early on in pregnancy it could make me wonder, but there is no way I could get more than halfway through pregnancy without catching on. I have an anterior placenta too, and there is no doubt that there is a baby in there.

@artbee: I have an anterior placenta & can assure you that the baby can still be felt regardless. a girlfriend of mine had a double anterior placenta & her belly still rolled, esp when she was further along in her pregnancy

I've never seen the show myself, but hear about one lady who never gained any weight {and was in pretty good shape/didn't need to lose anything}, had always had irregular periods due to some sort of medical condition, & took 2 at home pregnancy tests *and* went to the doctor for a test - all came back negative. I mean, if your dr tells you you aren't pregnant & you never gain weight? her baby was really small, too, from what I remember hearing on the radio. but still.

I've never seen the show, but where can I sign up for a symptom-free pregnancy? Compared to the misery that was my pregnancy experience, suddenly being like "hey! I'm 32 weeks pregnant! Who knew?!" sounds kind of awesome.

@artbee: Yea it was pretty scary. By the time I got in for the ultrasound they told me I was 36 weeks and was due 3 months before I thought I was based on LMP. I was 15 years old and had no time to prepare myself for anything.

I have a cousin who is in her late 40's. Her and her husband tried for years to get pregnant, including IVF, never being able to conceive. They gave up trying about 15 years ago. 3 months ago she went to the doctor for what she was assuming were menopause issues and found out she was 37 weeks pregnant. She delivered a happy healthy baby, but we were all in shock.

I think that if you aren't looking for some symptoms you may be able to over look them.

The thought of it all is just so crazy. I mean like others have said, I can see not knowing for the first few weeks/months but geeesh! I have a friend who did not find out until she was 20 something weeks. She was Active Duty Military and going through some intense training at the time and was so stressed she thought that was the reason she had not had AF, then she got really sick and had to go into medical. While in there they told her she was pregnant, asked her if she wanted to know what she was having and she said yes. I could not even imagine that, "Hey lady your pregnant, by the way its a boy. Congrats" I cant imagine what that day was like for her and her DH. Let alone not know until labor! Yeah right!

@tequiero21: usually they think contractions are extremely bad cramps and then they think they have to poo, which is why they're on the toilet.

@cyndistar3: that must have been pretty crazy not to know for so long! I always feel bad for the women because they miss the fun parts of being pregnant.

I'm facinated by the show but still really don't believe most of it at all. I think most of the women are just completely in denial. There were a couple I saw that seemed legit (took multiple HPTs throughout pregnancy that were all negative and such) though.

But I feel like most of them are like well I gained 25 pounds, my period acted kind of funky, I felt movement that I attributed to gas, and felt really tired and spent a few weeks sick .... But I didn't know I was pregnant!

I went to about 5 months without knowing I was pregnant. I didn't get any actual symptoms and wasn't really overweight at the time but Ive always had pretty big weight fluxuations plus my belly didn't go out until 7 months. I knew I was pregnant when I started feeling movement. I don't understand how anyone could ignore the movement though...craziness.

haven't seen that show. the only way i could believe someone didn't know they were pregnant is if they were already way overweight. so an extra 10 pounds or so wouldn't have seemed weird to them. and if they didn't get morning sickness.

i do think it's weird that they'd give birth in a toilet or something. didn't they feel contractions?

@artbee: Yeah, I’m still a big judgy skeptic lol ;-p

That show does make me feel better though when I realize I’ve forgotten to take my prenatal for several days, or eaten lots of “bad” foods in a day. Those women never saw a doctor, drank, never changed their diets, never took prenatals and their babies all seem fine. (Of course most of those "can't do's" are recent medical recommendations in the history of birthing babies, but still.)

The other thing I have trouble believing are the women who give birth on the toilet because they thought they were having a bm. Granted, I’ve never given birth before so maybe its just so much pain you can't tell…but those are two totally different areas.

Yeah, some of the women I think are just ridiculous and in denial. I mean, some of them will say, "Looking back on it, there were a lot of symptoms, but..." and I think those ones are in denial. But some of them have good reason. I remember there was one where the woman had a nervous system disorder or something so she wouldn't have felt anything, and she had irregular periods her entire life. I can kind of see that. I think the ones where they took a pregnancy test and it was negative are kind of understandable, as are the ones where the person has always had irregular periods and have been told that they couldn't conceive.

Honestly, with my daughter I didn't have any morning sickness and didn't show until I was 32 weeks. I definitely started feeling her kick around 16 weeks, but if I had irregular periods, I might not have known I was pregnant until then. And I probably would have dismissed that as gas for the first few weeks or so. So I could see going to 20 weeks or so without knowing from my own personal experience. Luckily my periods are like clockwork, so as soon as I missed it I suspected something was up.

This time I had morning sickness, but also recognize my uterus expanding and things like that. That's why the ones that I don't understand AT ALL are the ones where the person has already given birth before.

I find this really hard to believe with all of the symptoms I had and a growing belly! Though, my friend literally had no symptoms nor a growing belly until like 22 weeks (and she's thin) so I suppose it's possible at least for a few months?

I think the concept of not knowing is easier to believe if the women have PCOS or if they are new moms battling weird hormones, etc.

Maybe it’s the skeptic in me, but I don’t believe any of those women truly didn’t know they were pregnant. I think most of them were either in denial about pregnancy, or didn’t want to tell their partners and figured an “OMG, I didn’t know I was pregnant, but now here is our little baby” would work better than being upfront from the start.
