@T.H.O.U.: it was ok. Wakeup around 11, it wasn't horrible though- not the TERRIBLE screaming. I didn't even change her, just smal bottle and back to bed. Seemed more potentially night terror/nightmare-like than her being in pain- I'm thinking it's either a sleep disturbance or an ear infection. I'm waivering between calling the ped or not. DH worked a double today so I havne't ran it by him but I think we'll have to have a talk tomorrow. I just don't know what's up! She seems fine besides these sleep issues. The only other thing I noticed is she seems to be kind of chewing her lips sort of - like drawing them into her mouth like you'd do if you wanted to pretend you had no teeth. So maybe it is a teeth thing or something. I honestly have no clue :(

@avivoca: Yes she absolutely does this!!! My other two LO's didn't ever have ear infections and I know most people tell you they come with a fever but my Anna hasn't ever had a fever with an onset of an ear infection.
This most recent one we are fighting, she had cut a tooth and then within about two days of it breaking the skin she had just the slightest amount of a runny nose but nothing more. Within a 24period of that is when she had the worst night since birth (not even kidding).

@kjpugs: The crappy thing about ear infections is that sometimes there aren't really any symptoms. Some babies get them just from teething, too. The last time I took M in I thought she had conjunctivitis because there was yellow gunk around one of her eyes. Turned out to be a double ear infection that was really bad, so I assume she had it for awhile before I took her in. I felt SO bad! That's not to say that your LO has one, but it's possible.

@kjpugs: H is cuddly, but this arching/pushing away with her feet/trying to get higher up on my shoulder is really new. It's like she's overtired but refuses to go to sleep. I've moved her bedtime up to 6:30, but that's really hard to maintain when we don't get home from work/daycare until 5:45 and she needs to eat too.

@Crisark: @lawbee11: Do your girls arch out of your arms as well? H has been doing this, and with her last ear infection we had no warning until she started screaming when we laid her down. The arching happened while we were on vacation and she was on antibiotics, but it's continued since then.

@kjpugs: Sorry to thread jack, but H has been doing this too and I don't get it either.

@lawbee11: she got over a cold about 2-3 weeks ago? She hasn't seemed to show any signs of an ear infection but if it happens again tonight I'm making an appointment. Typically the wake up isn't the super long time BTW- it was just that one night (which happened to be right at the end of her cold if I remember right. Last two nights it was maybe 20 minutes?

@kjpugs: Agree with @Crisark: --could be an ear infection. This is how LO acts when she has them (though she's never up that long in the MOTN). Has your LO recently had a cold or been congested?

Everytime Anna has an episode like this she has an ear infection. Every.Single.Time
She has a horrible night...waking hourly and screaming while sleeping, screaming and standing up in the crib still sleeping....last week and we took her in the next morning and low and behold she has an ear infection.

@kjpugs: I'm sorry you're having a tough time with wake ups. We had something similar happen around the 6 month mark one day she would wake up and call to me happily and the next week she was waking up screaming in what seemed like a quasi-sleep. She still does it but less frequently now that she can roll and reposition herself in the crib.

As for a night light, I really love our Graco sound machine - it has a nice soft blue light, it plugs in and plays different sound or even an ipod.

C has had a few episodes like that-- it would happen for a few nights close together, then just stop. I never did figure it out, though we chalked it up to teething because we blamed teething for everything. The week before she actually got teeth, no issues.

When it happened, I usually nursed her back to sleep, but there were some times when I had to just nurse to sleep and co sleep with her there in my arms. Then just as suddenly it would pass and she'd be fine.

@kjpugs: I got the Kinderglo nightlight off of amazon and have been using it to feed/change my LO in the middle of the night. It has different color lights which are different brightness, so you can kind of choose how much light you want in the room. It has a charging station so you can leave it on there, or carry it with you. So far it's worked out great for us!

@kjpugs: If its something you want on all night, you may want to consider something that plugs in. Otherwise you might really eat a lot of batteries. We have a projection one that shows Nemo up on the ceiling but the actual part on the wall is also pretty bright.

@T.H.O.U.: I have been thinking of getting a nightlight, I might just go ahead and try to find one that works for her space, I think that's better than the current "leave her door slightly open" which allows pugs to run in, distract her, etc occasionally. I'd love a really soft nightlight that can sit on her dresser. Any recommendations?

I'm so sorry.... We never really dealt with the long time wake ups (like being up from 3:30-5) but we still deal with frequent screams/cries in the middle of the night (last night I think it was 10:30, 1:30 and 3). At least now though, we just have to go tuck her back in and she falls right back asleep.

Has the light changed in her room at all? Maybe she's ready for a night light so she doesn't get scared.

this happened to my daughter from an EARLY age (under 3 months?) to around a year, maybe a little past. I chalked it up to nightmares because it was just unexplainable otherwise. I'm sorry you're dealing with it, it's so sad to see them cry like that :( I would just go in and rock her back to sleep. It never affected her ability to put herself to sleep in a non-nightmare situation.

After 6 nights of STTN, LO (7 months this week) had two really bad nights. She doesn't nap well, but we just slightly changed her schedule about 2-3 weeks ago and it had been going SO much better. She now goes down around 6-6:15pm and she was sleeping 12.5 hours. Before that she was going down earlier and would have one wakeup, but it was generally calm.

The last two nights, she woke up before midnight (8pm Saturday and 10pm Sunday) screaming. Not the usual "give me attention" cries, or the fussing while transitioning through different sleep phases. SCREAMING. Like run upstairs to make sure she's ok screaming. She has done this occasionally in the middle of the night before, but not that often. The last time this happened before was April 26 early AM.

Both times this week she got fully checked out by us (no temp, no real apparent reason to be crying) and a small bottle got her back down. Both nights of sleep were somewhat restless though.

I hate playing the guess-it game. We had a friend who was helping us with sleep training (wasn't charging us, or else we wouldn't be able to do it) but she just got diagnosed with a chronic (serious) illness so I am trying not to bother her. Plus, she was big on having me check things with her ped and making sure she's healthy before worrying about sleep- that's how we figured out she had reflux.

The reflux seemed to have gotten better, she was missing some doses and doing fine, and she ran out 4/28, and my insurance wouldn't let me refill at a store. So we decided to see how she would do (yes, I probably need to talk to the ped- but I know many kids grow out of it by this point) and she's had seemingly no issues- everything that pointed to it before is now gone. Plus, she wasn't on the meds since then- many of those nights she STTN.

She is eating foods- the only new food we introduced was mango on Saturday, but I purposely didn't give it to her yesterday in case that was the culprit (and she still had the episode.)

I tried researching night terrors to see if that could be it. Man, does the information on those vary!!! She does seem out of it whenthis is going on- she cries hard and it kind of jerks her head while she's crying (like with the rhythm of her crying) and she looked kind of glazed. Seems it would make sense with the whole "still asleep" part of night terrors. However last night I took her downstairs with me right away to make her a small bottle, and when she saw our pugs she smiled (they always make her smile and laugh) so I dunno? On Saturday when I tried to comfort her pre-bottle she kept putting her head on my shoulder to fall asleep then would snap it up- kind of like someone trying to stay awake.

When this happened on April 26th it took an hour or two but she tired herself out- even the bottle didn't help, she was up from about 3/3:30 til five.

She has her bottom two teeth, I don't see any real signs of more? DH swears she's drooling more- maybe? And chewing on things? I mean, she did that for months before the first teeth. She also didn't have an episodes like this that I could tie to teething with her first ones- the week or two before they popped through were rather uneventful.

I just don't know what to do here. If I call the ped (which I have to about the medicine for reflux and let them know we went off of it) what am I going to say? Oh she screams at night sometimes? It just seems like more of a mom-feeling that it's not just a typical wakeup based on knowing her cries. And I know that most sleep specialists aren't going to help if there's a potential health question. So I dunno. There are too many variables and I hate that.

Anyone have any experience/advice/insight? I'm desperate to understand what my girl is going through!
