I got hooked on the Beatles during high school - aka Beatlemania II (when the Anthologies came out).<br /> For me, what works about them is no matter the kind of mood I'm in, they have a song that fits it. Sad? Yesterday. Frustrated? Help! Silly? Yellow Submarine.<br /> Although there are artists out there today that are able to replicate the variety of music the Beatles created, I think the big thing is they were the FIRST. And whenever someone/something is the first, there tends to be staying power.<br /> I also think it's amazing that after they broke up, all four went on to have successful music careers of their own - you can't say that of a lot of other musical groups. It seems that now there's one or two strong members in the group and the others are there to fill gaps. Identifying specific songs to explain what makes the Beatles awesome is... hard. Blackbird is lyrically and musically beautiful. Come Together is like musical chocolate to me. Penny Lane, She's Leaving Home, Lovely Rita, Lady Madonna, Ob-la-di, etc, are essentially short stories. Here Comes the Sun always makes me feel better musically and lyrically, and I've sung it through tears a fair few times. Honey Pie and Octopus' Garden make me giggle. Julia lowers my pulse every time I listen to it (it's not my favorite of theirs.) Revolution 1 is not only a nice, relaxed classic-ish rock song, but the lyrics are also great (do NOT confuse this with Revolution 9, which is... bizarre. Just don't listen to it.) When I'm 64 is, to me, a very sweet love song, and All Together always makes me cheerful. Many of their songs are perfect for little kids, whether happy silly songs or lullabies. Basically, they have something for every mood - except intractable anger. And considering that that's the only emotion I'm opposed to, there's ALWAYS a Beatles song that appeals. </p> <p>Mind you, they also liked mocking their fans/producers, etc... Gnik Nus? Only a Northern Song? Cover of Abbey Road? The music is just incredible in every sense of the word. The fact that that they are lyrically as powerful as they are musically is extremely rare. They were the first artists to write and perform their own music themselves that got that big. Elvis, Frank Sinatra etc didnt. They were socially aware and wrote songs identifying with the times. And their works sometimes symbolized social movements of the day, so that gave them added momentum. I think they've proven to be timeless because they're generally upbeat and happy songs.
