@MamaMoose: Is having it in there for a prolonged time harmful? My son is 20lbs and ours says 15lbs, but I kind of want to keep it in there because i'm a worrywart.

I am a Car Seat Technician and knowing how dangerous it is I would absolutely message her. Most moms make the mistake unknowingly and just need to be informed. It is especially concerning knowing it is a long car trip they are on. Best of luck- I know it is a tough decision.

@looch: It totally made sense! It's so hard to know what the best/right thing to do is . . . and I totally agree that (most, if not all) parents just want the absolute best for the LOs. :)

@MsLipGloss: I agree, we all want to have our children be the safest possible, but not all of those extras are tested in order to prove they're safer ( I hope that made sense).

eta: the only car seats I think are truly "safer" are the Swedish convertibles. Those have been extensively tested and are installed differently than US seats, so for me, those are worth it.

It's so hard because sometimes people really don't know the risks. I was recently with my cousin and she had the same Chicco KeyFit car seat as us. She had mentioned earlier in the day that her LO was 15lbs and then when she went to put LO in the car seat I noticed she still had the infant pad in there (which is supposed to be removed at 11lbs). I just casually said oh hey, the manual says you should pull that thing out after they're 11lbs. She was greatful I pointed it out as she hadn't known that. BUT... that was a situation where I could just kind of casually say something without making a production out of specifically reaching out to her just to point out a parenting mistake she made. In your situation I would probably leave it alone but it would bother me a lot.

i was in a similar situation a couple of years ago. my brother and sil pulled up to a cookout with their 3 month old in my sil's lap! they only drove about 3/4 of a mile but the cookout was on a really country road and deer are majorly over populated. also, my brother has a HORRIBLE driving record and has literally said, proudly, "i have two speeds, fast and faster."

i was beside myself with anger that they would put their infant daughter in that type of danger but i bit my tongue at the time in order to not cause an argument in front of the entire family.

but i did end up sending my sil a message that night basically saying i know you thought it just a short drive and nothing would happen, but statistics show that most car accidents happen within miles of your house and i just want you to be aware..."

i basically got a big fat eff you in response. and i was told that it was their baby and they could do what they wanted to with her. i then told her well if i saw it again i would call the police. harsh? maybe, but my niece's safety is more important to me than my sil's and brother's feelings.

basically all this is to say that if you do decide to say something it is almost for sure not going to be received well. at the same time, you have to decide what you can live with. personally, i knew if something ever happened to my niece while she was in the car with them and i had never spoken up i would live with that regret for the rest of my life.

@looch: I agree that all car seats have to meet a *minimum* requirement . . . but to the extent that I can get a car seat that exceeds those minimum requirements, even if it is just a little bit better, I am certainly going to do that . . . The goal being to increase the odds of LO being unharmed in an accident to the greatest extent possible.

@rawrasaur: Though it occurs to me that I'm not the best person to ask. My cousin went around telling our family that I was trying to take away her kids, after I asked one of my aunts if her spanking was as out of control as it seemed from her blog. (It wasn't, and I dropped it. And I never intended to do anything but talk to my cousin herself if it was. Oy.)

But I thought all car seats had to meet minimum safety requirements in order to be sold in the US, just like cribs? I know I read that some where but I have a meeting I have to chair in a few minutes and I don't have time to look.

My point is whether you spend $50 or $500, they're both safe if they are properly installed.

Hell, my aunt brought her 15 month LO over for a visit recently (they live out of province) without ANY kind of carseat and was just held by her mom while in the car. None of us agreed with it, but didn't say a word.

@LizSmith: Thanks for your input! That is honestly my gut reaction, but I think I don't feel right overstepping. If I did, I would have to be very careful about how worded it to come off least judgemental. I think in a few days I may share that video and hope she sees it - that way any other friend can be informed as well.

@Mrs Green Grass: Finding one used is dangerous because a- carseats "expire," and b- you don't know how it's been taken care of. You're never supposed to wash the straps, and if it's in a wreck it should be replaced. You don't know if they've been careful about those sorts of things. Though maybe in this case the risks of a questionable carseat are lower than the risk of front-facing too soon?

I guess I don't agree with most folks. I didn't know the risks until very recently, and had I not found out, I would want someone to tell me. And in your situation, if it was someone I wasn't that close to, I wouldn't be that worried if they resented my telling them.

According to my state, you should never forward face before 1 year AND 20-22 lbs, but that you should stay rear facing as long as possible. I'm not sure that it is punishable by law, though.
