@TurtleDoves: I was pretty surprised to find that most of our nannies didn't know about bottle propping, back to sleep, cutting grapes in half--- basic baby safety. We're coming up on our one year anniversary with ours and now she knows just about everything I could think to teach about infant and toddler safety :)

@Mrs. Jacks: I'm so glad you educated your nanny on something that was important to you.
One thing I was never educated on while nannying, was infant sleep safety. This lady i'm talking about (neighbor) knew I was just an uncertified college kid, and she never bothered to mention the blanket thing or back versus belly thing in all of our 3 years together. Lucky those kids are still alive!

I feel very lucky that our nanny is so open to learning new things and really respects our parenting style.

We had to show her all the research on screen time to convince her but now she's totally on board.

I didn't realize even that this was a thing...

@TurtleDoves: @Mrs. Pen: @travelingnanny: yeah one nanny saw that LO was on formula and gave me the whole breast is best speech. I especially did not appreciate her comments because she has no kids. So no, just nooooooo!!! Just make the bottle and feed it to my baby. Thanks!!!!!

@travelingnanny: This lady irks me as well because, I was a "freelance"** nanny in college. I worked with 2 families, but one of them I had for nearly 3 years full-time and over-time. I LOVED them. I spent more time with them then their parents did because of the parents' workload. I had one child since he was 5w old! But, I *never* felt like I could dictate how their parents raised them. Some things bugged me (feeding and sleep schedules), but I couldn't manipulate everything in their family. I did suggest things (maybe you guys should buy the kids some bikes because their bored) (maybe we could start bedtime earlier because I have a hard time getting them up for school..) But I never pushed it, and therefore the parents responded very well to me.

@ANDREA: I knew the mother already had mommy guilt for working such long hours, so I always tried my best to let her parent her own kids. I never wanted her to feel like "I'M THEIR NEW MOMMY!" That's just insane...

**I am no formal certification and was not employed by an agency

@jmarionsmith- Ha! I bet that will happen to me. I admit I will sometimes say I'm going to do X once I have my own children. Hopefully my plans don't backfire on me :)

I feel like it is SUPER EASY for a nanny to over-step her boundaries because she does spend so much time with kids, so she might start to feel like a super mom because she has been with kids of all ages and multiple families. But, um, maybe she knows how to do *her* job, but she does not know how to do all nanny's jobs, and she sure doesn't have a right to tell a mother how to do her job!
Like you said, although you believe in sleep training, it is not OK to push it on another mother who you are not even employed by. It's not like this nanny has to wake up with this 6m old all the time...

ugh! totally agree! i used to be a nanny and have a nanny friend that i still hang out with (we actually met when i left my nanny job and she took over)... anyways, she alwayssss gives me advice/pulls the "when i have kids..." card and it drives me crazy!

she commented that my lo's stranger anxiety was because i don't take him around enough people. um, not really. it's a pretty normal part of infant development and not to mention he's around plenty of people! so frustrating!

i totally want to tell her "you know, i thought i knew a lot before i had lo, but it turns out, even with all my nannying experiences, i was pretty clueless!" but she's just one of those people that knows best.

@mrs. pen- And she totally judged the mom for the daycare she was going to use. Ugh! Not everyone can afford a nanny!

@googly-eyes- I hope not. I never really let things like this bother me but for some reason I am still annoyed over it.

@Andrea- This makes me so sad. As a nanny I have a ton of experiance but the mom is the one in charge. I'm just there to help raise the child.

I've had 3 nannies and they were all this way. I suppose they were all just trying to be helpful, but I didn't appreciate it! I know that all nannies can't be this way, but I haven't had good experiences. :-(

This afternoon I took LO to one of the local libraries to play/ check out some new books. When we first arrived there was already a woman with a few other young children. The woman overheard LO call me by my first name and asked if I was her nanny. I said yes. She then told me that she was also a nanny but also had two of her own children. We chatted about being nannies and found out that our bosses might actually work together. A little bit later another mom came into the play area with a little boy who was 6 months old. The other nanny asked if he was sleeping through the night and the mom said not really. The fellow nanny then began to tell the woman how she needed to start sleep training the child right away. The mom tried to be polite and say that she wasn't ready and stuff. I felt like the other nanny was SO pushy. Now, I think sleep training is the way to go but I would never push my views/ experiance on someone else, especially when it wasn't wanted in the first place! I wish I had said something like "eh, everyone is different. You have to do what is right for your family." I felt like she just made this momma feel like crap : (

The situation just irked me!
