Update: Smaller size was disaster! Upgraded to larger size (size L flanges) and seems good so far - also have been using lubricant which seems to help. Phew!!!

@winniebee: Good luck trying the new one. I had a bit of rubbing as well and the LC also suggested maybe a smaller one.

@tequiero21: I know - well they think it's bc my areolea is getting sucked into the shield and it shouldn't be. I ended up with some blisters at the base of my nipple/on my areola too : (

@winniebee: smaller shield? i figure if you're having blisters, you'd need a BIGGER one....

@tequiero21: I've been using standard 24mm. I talked to Medela today and they suggested a smaller shield so sent me new ones overnight to try (free of charge). Will see how they feel. Otherwise I may stop by An LC to see what they say.

@winniebee: are you using medela? i always had pretty small nipples so i thought the 24mm would be fine. when i was at the hopsital, they gave me 27 and that works a lot better.

@Thehistoryofus: I'm going to look into this! But why would I get blisters on the tips of my nipples if the flanges were too small?

It sounds like you really should look at the size of your flanges. If they aren't the right size it will cause friction which will give you blisters. Even at pumping on high every 3 hours I wouldn't think would give you a bad blister.

I was also told that before pumping I could use a bit of lanolin to help easy any friction.

I'm with @amy, maybe check to make sure youre using the right size shield? I saw a lc when i was trying to bd and the first thing she told me was that i was using the wrong size shield. Have you looked through the medela pump manual? It has a section on how to assess whether your shield is too big/ too small.

@tequiero21: ditto!

I have been using the earths best butter before feedings too and things are definitely on the mend. I do wonder if my pump parts are the right size though.

I have a blister on one nipple : ( I've been exclusively pumping for about 10 days and apparently my pump setting has been on too high. I have gotten sore all over again (like the first week of nursing) and LO is 7 weeks. I've been using nipple butter (the organic one, forget the name) the past few days....I should have been more careful!
