@ShootingStar: ok, that makes more sense! It looks like they could totally stick a baby gate by the cubby area! Must be chaos with all the kids clustering around the entrance every day though.

@lamariniere: We go to a daycare center that has several rooms off of one main hallway. We walk in the main door and then down the hall to the classroom. If the kids escape out the door, it's only to the hallway. Because I have too much time on my hands, here's a diagram of the room :silly: . There's actually another toddler room that's connected through the bathroom/coat room.

I guess I don't understand the layout of the daycare? Does the main door directly connect the playroom and the outside? They should build a separation between the playroom/coatroom area/entrance. Our daycare has a structure that looks somewhat like a 3' tall fence that separates the coat area from the playroom so that kids can't just wander around or escape when people are coming and going. To me, it sounds like a child escaping would be even worse than pinched fingers.

Hypothetically speaking, what would they do if instead of a finger pinch, a child got out?

I just don't see how letting the kids be near the door is a good practice in any scenario.

Agree with others, the teachers should actively watch the kids and keep them in the main area away from the doors during drop off and pick up. Maybe this hasn't occurred to the director or other teachers, but that's seems like an easy, free solution.

I wonder how the little girl's parents responded when they told them her finger got pinched in the hinge.

I would be annoyed with the response as well. I think this is easily solved with the teachers setting some rules about the doors. Not every accident can be prevented but it could help!

I would have such a hard time with this. Our center is great about keeping the kids behind the area where all of the bags, coats, etc. are. I don't know what I would do if all sorts of cutie kids were swarming me as I took care of things with E. You did the right thing by saying something. I hope your new center is a better experience.

@ShootingStar: yeah I would mention to the teacher than and be like "you know it would be nice if we could have a little space in the mornings so I can say my goodbyes, ect." That to me just seems like logic and someone who is inexperienced who might not even think about how annoying it is to have toddlers hanging on you/child in the morning.

Our daycare this morning, my daughter's little friend was excited to see her (she's been out for awhile) and she ran up to say hi, but our in home daycare said "M you need to wait for E to say goodbye to her mommy and take her coat off" and problem solved, even at like 18 months old she knew the rules. I got my hug/kiss, got LO situated, I told M hi, and sent E off to play with her friends. Doesn't need to be difficult, just a routine.

@rachiecakes: seriously I was thinking the same thing! The door to the outside should be blocked off by baby gates or something so kids can't run out every time the door is opened. Kids swarm the cubby area at my daycare too (so friendly! All the kids like to hug lo!) but the children can't get to the outside door from there

Oh, and I don't expect them to change out the doors. It would be nice if they could add an external hinge guard. But my issue is never once have the teachers redirected kids away from the door. I honestly had no idea that fingers getting caught in it was a possibility because no one has ever seemed concerned!

I agree that the door situation maybe can't be changed but they can definitely set a rule about having kids away from the drop off area, or maybe plan an activity for during drop off time that will bring the kids away from that area. Our daycare has an internal half door once you walk in. Basically you have the coat/shoe area and then they built a wooden half door that keeps the kids out of that area but still allows you to see in to the room and talk to the teachers as needed.

Her response was way out of line though to somehow make it seem like it should have been your responsibility. You are responsible for your own child ONLY while you are on the premisses, THEY are responsible for all other children.

@Mamaof2: Ugh, I have no idea. Seems like the simplest solution, right?

@LuLu Mom: Yeah, I think the big issue is the teacher education. Not once have I seen a teacher re-direct the kids away from the door. They always swarm us in the morning and the teachers just let them. DH said the same thing happens at night, all the kids get right up in the doorway, and the teachers don't say a word.

I empathize - DS's class has a couple of very wily escape artists who love to hang out by the door. During busy drop-off/pick-up hours, why isn't one of the teachers posted closer to the door to greet or say goodbye?? Very annoying!

@ShootingStar: how about they keep the kids out of the doorway??? if they're not going to do anything about the doors (honestly, our preschool wouldn't have changed the doors for an incident like that), they have to make sure the kids are kept out of the doorways.
I realize these people don't have eyes in the back of their heads, but when you do this kind of work you have to be aware of where the children are.
Can't they arrange a sit down activity or something while the kids are arriving?

Hmmm, I guess I'm torn. I think the teachers needs to be better about keeping the kids away from the doors and have rules about letting the kids and parent get situated (this is what ours does, they know to leave us alone as we remove coat, hang up bag, ect.)

However, a door is a door, I don't think there is much to do to prevent it from possibly pinching fingers. I don't think replacing the door is necessary, pretty much any door has potential to pinch, but I think being strict about implementing rules about safe distance is key.

I think her response is total BS, she can speak to the teacher and explain that during busy drop off/pick up time that it is essential the play area be away from the doors allowing the child/parent space.

Do they make guards for door hinges?? My kid's totally pinched her fingers in doors before--and now she leaves them alone for the most part.

I hate my daycare. Like, really really have no patience, no anything left for this place. I am counting down the days until our new center is built so I can pull him out of there.

This morning I brought my son in and a couple of little girls came up to him while I was trying to get his coat off. I was concerned with him and with getting the door closed so there were no escapees, and I didn't realize one of the girls went behind me and was playing with the door hinge. I let the door close and it closed with her finger in it.

I'm hoping it's not broken, but it looked awful. She was so upset too :(. I feel so bad. And yet, I'm mostly just really pissed at them.

I left the room after I got DS settled in and I told the assistant director (director wasn't there) that they needed to do something about the doors ASAP. She told me there was nothing they could do because they're fire doors, so the pinch guards would keep them from closing. She said sometimes classrooms have the play area in the back to keep them away from the door. So I told her she needed to be more proactive about this and her response was, "How are we supposed to be proactive? This hasn't happened in a long time." My jaw hit the floor.

This can't be normal right? I was standing in the middle of the hall yelling at her that they were toddlers and how could they not be vigilant about the doors? I have to make sure every single day that DS doesn't get his fingers caught every time I close a door at home. And in a place full of professional childcare workers, it hasn't occurred to anyone that the doors are dangers. What the actual F*CK?
