We moved into a duplex before our neighbors moved in and their smoke detector was chirping with low batteries for days before they finally arrived and replaced the batteries. Clearly our awesome landlords did nothing about it. I think our pets nearly went insane.

Later that winter, ours went in the middle of the night too. We had no 24hr Walmart or anything so I had to pay out the wazoo for batteries at a gas station.

@PrincessBaby: It would drive me nuts if my husband wasn't home. The one that started beeping in the middle of the night is the one I can't reach (even on a chair) due to the ceiling height.

At the rental house we had in Minnesota, one of the smoke detectors there decided it needed a new battery at 2am. I agree, the manufacturers probably do program them that way.

I think they're programmed to only have problems between 2-4am. At the height of my pregnancy insomnia - like I would cry during the day bc I was so exhausted - I FINALLY fell asleep at around 2am one night. My husband works offshore so he was gone. Well at 3am, it started beeping once every few mins. I tried to ignore it, but the dog was going nuts. Eventually I had to get up and figure out which one it was. I put my pregnant self on a step stool, and removed it completely from the ceiling because I was not trying to mess around with battery changes. And it still beeped even though I unhooked it. So then I took the battery out, and it still beeped. And I unhooked some wire thingy. And it still beeped. I thought I was going crazy! I ended up putting it inside of DH's truck in the garage to make it leave me alone!!!!

The best part is that when I was trying to locate where the beep was coming from, I unplugged our carbon monoxide detector that's plugged into the wall. I had pulled it out and set it on the floor while I waited to see if the beeping continue. Needless to say, I forgot to plug it in again, so I guess it also had a battery it started working off of. Well a week later - same thing happened with the stupid carbon monoxide detector. Beeping for a new battery at 4am. I almost totally lost my mind when that happened too!!!

One of them had a low battery last night around 5pm and told us this at random intervals until we figured out which one and changed the battery. That was our last battery which kind of worried me but what were the odds one would go out within the same day.

Apparently the odds are very good since it happened at 3 this morning. My wonderful husband went to Walmart instead of disconnecting it and getting more sleep and just replaced all the other batteries too.

I like that they're apparently working well but really? 3am?
