Feed and pump as normal, I'd say. If you're not feeling a plug, you're possibly just dealing with residual pain. I found that the flu symptoms cleared up within about 24-36 hours and the pain lasted a day or two beyond that. Hope you're feeling better soon; mastitis is pretty terrible.

I just nursed as much as possible, from both breasts. It was so painful, but it cleared up fast.

@sarahbs: how will I know I have thrush if I get it?

I second the probiotics to avoid thrush! For me, it was worse than mastitis and lasted a few months!

Agh just saw your post im sorry!

Feed her with her chin angled toward the spot/blockage, and dangle if possible to let gravity help. Massage while feeding or pumping.

I had my first bout at 6 weeks so I already had a somewhat established supply, but I fed or pumped as normal. When I wasn't feeding I was aggressive about alternating ice and a microwaved rice sock and massaging the spot. It hurt like a b but helps move the block out. Also Advil helps reduce the inflammation and pain!

If you have the antibiotics it should help quickly. That was the worst for me, getting my doctor to believe me (I tried my GP first, then called my OB who prescribed over the phone). Make sure to take probiotics to avoid thrush!

I hope you feel better soon! It is the pits!

Ugh. I never had mastitis, but I had lots of plugged ducts. LO would also only take one breast. I would say keep alternating, and just make sure your LO is draining the best as much as possible. Offer both at each feeding. And I also said screw the "never wake a sleeping baby" rule and if I was miserably engorged, I would wake him up to eat.

Your body is SIL regulating itself and your supply can be all over the place. It will sort itself out soon enough.

I think you're already doing the right things (hot compress, massage). I would try not to feed extra from the left breast because I think it will only make you engorged on the right and make your left breast produce even more milk? So I would just keep alternating like before, and make sure the breast is emptied before you switch. But I'm no expert so I hope others will have good advice for you!

My baby is one week old and I have mastitis. I went to urgent care yesterday and got an antibiotic injection and just started taking my antibiotics today.

I've read the Kellymom article on mastitis. I'm doing the warm compress, massage, nursing and then pumping that side after the feeding. I don't feel any hard lumps so I'm wondering if the clogged duct is gone already? But my breast is still really tender and hurts to touch it.

Anyone have any tips for me? I'm so glad DH is still on paternity leave to be able to help me.

Also I'm confused about how much to nurse that side. She usually only takes one breast per feeding. I'm worried about nursing that side too much and the other side not enough and getting it in the other boob.

For example, I nursed her on the infected boob (left breast) last then pumped a little more milk out of it. For the next feeding, do I feed her again from the infected boob? Or do I feed her from the right boob? That breast is already feeling engorged so I can't imagine waiting until the feeding after to nurse her on that side. But then I want to make sure I'm nursing enough on the infected side. And I'm nervous that if I nurse her too much on the infected breast, I'll start getting an oversupply in that breast.

Am I overthinking this? What did you do when you had mastitis?
