@MsLipGloss: I know I know..... every time I think we should watch I feel like we're so late to the game it just won't be funny now. All the build up about how awesome it is and I don't want to be disapointed.

@prettylizy: Whaaaaa? The Hangover (both I and II) both have some seriously hilarious one-liners, and are packed with the kind of humor that is funny while making you feel uncomfortable. I didn't want to like them . . . but I do!

"Toodle-oo mudderfu[ xxx]ers"

@Mrs. Pen: Yeah, it's a pretty small town of less than 1,200, I think. The whole school, all the grades, averages less than 130 kids. I think the graduating class is maybe 12 this year? So, yeah, pretty tiny. And everyone has to be involved in everything or you don't get to complain about how things are done, lol. But really, it's one of the foundations of the community. Everyone is involved, one way or another, and school fundraisers and concerts are pretty big social events in the calendar year. Of course, it's a small enough town where EVERYONE goes to the home football games, whether you have kids in school or not, because there's nothing else to do on a Friday night, lol- unless you're still harvesting, of course. But, if we do decide to do some homeschooling, our school district is also pretty good about working with homeschooling families who want their kids to be involved in certain classes or extracurriculars. We don't really have any private school options, but I feel pretty good about what we do have. I just have to get my GED to be able to legally homeschool here. I don't think I'm real great teacher material either, for multiple reasons, which is partly why they'll have to go to school until they can read because, OMG, I do not have the patience to teach something like that. They'll have to be able do some work on their own, read the instructions, etc. IF I'm going to do it. If it's just one or two kids and a good curriculum, I'm more confident if my abilities than if I had 5 in various grades and then another 5 kids under 5 years of age or something insane like that. Ufftah.

@FarmWifeGina: our little school district sounds positively charming!!! When my older siblings were little (I was a baby), we lived in northern rural Minnesota in a town of less than maybe 500 people! The school district was amazing and they encouraged parents to volunteer and be a part of he school day. My mom loved it. Then when my dad couldn't find work up there they moved down to where we all love now and the district is horrible. I mean not all bad but compared to what they had, she was so disappointed and that's why she took them out of school... So I never even had the opportunity to go to school. Anyway all that to say in a district like that- public school sounds like a really amazing set up!

I know that I personally don't have patience to teach which is why I hesitate on whether I'd be able to homeschool or not. But my husband does have the patience. He is a teacher actually! I do know that if we send J to public school, we're definitely moving somewhere else before he starts kindergarten. It's such a hard decision isn't it! I totally agree that it also really depends on the type of child. I liked homeschooling up until high school and then hated and really struggled with it. But my little brothers LOVE it and have no desire whatsoever to attend school.

I love that you're so open to whatever :) it's a great attitude to have.

PS I still do get sad too about missing all those fun high school memories of school dances, homecoming, graduation etc. it's definitely an element homeschooling can't give you.

@Mrs. Pen: Oh, yes, I COMPLETELY agree with you! I think if done well, it can be one of the best things you could ever do for your kids! The problem comes when you only do it for "character", aka, sheltering reasons, rather than because you know you can give your kids a better education.

It will depend on the kid as to how we school them. Probably kindy and the first few grades (until they know how to read with some comprehension) at the local public school (small, rural, conservative- pretty much as tame and unscary as you can get for a public school, lol) and then, depending on the kid and their style, maybe some homeschooling for the rest of elementary and middle school. I would reeeeeeeeally like them to attend public high school and get a real, official diploma. I've been to our local, small town high school commencement ceremonies and dammit, I want them to have that chance to walk and to have the whole town show up to recognize their achievement. But, we'll see...

ETA: I know that my experience isn't that of the majority of homeschoolers, but there is a percentage of us and the stereotypes don't exist for no reason.

@FarmWifeGina: oh my gosh I'm so sorry. That is such a difficult situation and I totally understand how it would be hard even seven years later to let go of all of that. I take it your parents still believe they were 100% right? It's really sad that there have to be stories like yours that taint the rest of those who homeschool; because it really can be such a beautiful and positive experience for the right family! I'd never say it's for everyone, but done correctly it can be so beneficial in all areas of life.
Have you decided on a schooling method for your babies?

@Mrs. Pen: @.twist.: Yeeeeeeaaaah, I haven't been able to be that gracious towards my parents yet. Yeah, I know that in a however misguided way, they felt they were doing the right thing, there was a lot of fear in their decision-making. And there were abuse issues beyond the homeschooling thing, but that was definitely extension of those issues. And I know that this life is not all that matters, from a Christian perspective, but God did give us a life to enjoy, there's certain things, such as my teen years, that I'll never get back. And other things were their responsibility. I have a pretty dreadful education because they didn't care about your basic readin', writin', 'rithmetic. And when I left home at 17, almost 18, I literally had the social skills of a 13-year-old. I was always told that I had siblings, I didn't need other friends. I'm still catching up socially, I used to have horrible, horrible social anxiety, sometimes still do, although I know better how to cover it now. And one of these days I'll have to sit my mommy brain down and study for my GED, which I totally should have done before I had had kids, before I got married, but, yeah, I was pretty messed up back then. Anyways, yeah, I guess I'm still not over my rebellious teenage thoughts, lol. I wouldn't say I'm bitter, although I'm sure certain people would use that word, I'm just still learning to live in the real world, although the way I was raised doesn't define how I live now. And there's probably facets of my personality that I wouldn't have if I hadn't been homeschooled. It's probably why I walk to the beat of my own obnoxious drum, lol.
