I would also think your son would know the party would probably be on a weekend anyway, so I don't think it'll be a huge huge deal. It might be harder to explain away if it were on a Saturday or something but I think it'll be fine!

I haven't had to miss a birthday but with my DH's job being hectic and unpredictable he has missed a lot of holidays. We just sort of "reschedule" them and that explanation has been ok with my daughter (who is about the same age as your son.) we just warn her ahead of time, and I would have your dh do something little on the day of, like a special treat with the class or a special dinner or a small gift, and then do the party or main gift/celebration/treat when you are home. Good luck!

@travelingnanny: You're right! It'll probably be a much bigger deal for me than for him. Thanks for the suggestions. :)

@Modern Daisy: Good thoughts. That's my initial plan.

@T.H.O.U.: Ha, if there is ever a time to buy love. :) I can definitely tell that DS1's love language is receiving gifts and quality time so I think I can hit those.

Maybe also leave a present he can unwrap on his real birthday from you and you can watch via FaceTime (buy his love!? haha j/k). Save another present to open together when you are home.

Ps. one of the birthdays that was missed was a 5th birthday and my boss had me plan a bowling party + invited the whole class. It was a huge hit!!! My boss wasn't able to attend the actual birthday or the party but my nanny kid knew she was loved and knew that her parent wanted to be there.

I'm so sorry! 😥 I was on a work trip for DS2's first birthday this summer and just turned down a work event the night of DS1's 4th birthday! Obviously the 1 yo had no idea but I still threw a huge party for him out of guilt. if I had to attend the event on DS1's bday though I'd probably throw him a big party right before I left and try to FaceTime on his actual bday. It's so hard!!

My bosses have both missed multiple birthdays because of their jobs. It really isn't a huge deal. The parents are the one who deal with the guilt but the kids aren't super phased. At least when they are young. I just wouldn't make a big deal about it beforehand because then they won't know to worry about it. Plan the party for the following weekend and hype it up. FaceTime on his actual birthday and have your SO plan something fun. Or maybe ask a friend if he can go to their house for a fun playdate. If it is when he's in school then I would send in a special treat.

It will be ok. I promise :)

I have a conference I have to attend in November and DS1 will turn 5 in the middle of it. He's obviously old enough to know what day his birthday is so I can't just play it off like it was another day. I'll be gone from Wed-Sun and his birthday is that Thurs. I had planned on having his birthday party the weekend before and I was going to take off that Mon/Tues to spend some time with him but obviously still feel the guilt.

Has anyone missed their LO's birthday? Any tips on how to make it easier on the both of us?
