Awww, I'm so sorry!!! Pumping and dumping is the worst! But now you know about it and I'm sure you LO will be okay!

This reminds me that I ought to sterilize my pump parts... I don't do it as often as I should.

I'm so sorry! I found mold growing inside our hospital bulb syringes (I cut it open to see) and I was shocked. I had been using those for months to suction out my kids noses. And mouths!! I only use the nosefrida now. I hate mold. :(

OK - for the greater good.

This is the part where the mold is, I kept the (new) membrane on because the mold showed better against the white, but it is in fact on the clear plastic lip at the base of the flange. Disregard the milk residue from pumping earlier.

@lindseykaye: thanks. I have a medela and I don't think it has an equivalent part. I always take the whie membrane off to clean it. I only pump a couple of times a week so I also feel I need to be extra careful since I got longer between uses.

@holdonforonemoreday: That is really helpful! We have the straw cleaner things (descriptive! hah) but the metal tip would poke a hole so I never trusted it.

@Foodnerd81: I have an Ameda Purely yours pump and I found the mold at the bottom of the opening where the milk flows into the membrane (but then also inside my membranes). It's hard to see in this but I circled the area on a stock photo of the flange.

I should take a photo of my actual flange but it's gross and I am embarassed I didn't notice it before :/

That's terrible! Can you explain where you found the mold exactly? I want to make sure to really wash those parts well! What kind of pump?

I guess that's one plus to Dh never washing my parts. I kind of dont trust him to be careful enough.

@lindseykaye: I use my pinky to clean inside those stupid membranes. I had the same issue as you - DH washed my parts once and didn't do a good enough job. I didn't see any mold, but after pumping I noticed a smell, and all the parts smelled sooo badly, like rotten milk :(

@travellingbee: I have those too but got really lazy about using them as LO got older and as things seemed to be going fine without. You'd better bet that I'll be using them again now!

The only silver lining is that I don't have to spend as much time today pumping, since I don't have a target goal of ounces. Just have to pump to relieve the discomfort and remind my body that, yep - still need to make that milk!

@pinkcupcake: Seriously, it's probably not any worse than what I have sitting on my desk at work. When I took things apart, I also saw that there was mold growing inside my membranes (Ameda Purely Yours) and there is more there than in the flanges.
How am I supposed to wash the inside of those effectively without tearing them apart? wth.

@lindseykaye: I DON'T KNOW!! So many stupid little parts to clean and dry! Definitely go take a close look at all the parts, especially if there's anything that might not get properly dried. I'd post up a picture of what I found, but you might not be able to hold down your last meal :T

@Katrocap: Yeah, there is no way in hell that I am tossing my freezer stash. LO is 10+ months now and I am so close to dropping to one pumping session a day... but I need my stash to supplement for the month of October until she turns one and we can transition to whole milk.
Good point though that LO seemed fine regardless. It's pretty much how I feel but my worry about that is the fact that my LO has had a runny nose/congestion for about a week. Is she allergic to mold? I'm allergic to mold! GAH.

@lindseykaye: So sorry! I feel your pain. Over the summer I discovered mold in the handle of my Medela manual pump. I had no idea how long it had been there, so I tossed my whole freezer stash (at least 50 oz.). It was frustrating. I felt so guilty that I had possibly been feeding DS contaminated milk, but, if so, he seemed none the worse for it. Hugs and good luck. At least we'll be more vigilant in our cleaning from now on!

Oh no! :( I'm so sorry!!

I didn't have mold growing in my pump parts, but I did see a TON of nasty black stuff in LO's sippy cup part once :( I'm religious about cleaning it, but I guess there was one time I didn't dry it properly. I was so grossed out and couldn't believe she might have ingested some of it :(

Today I looked a little harder at my pump parts and saw that there is MOLD growing in the little teeny crevices at the bottom of my flanges!
My sweet DH washes my pump parts for me, but I haven't been looking closely enough before just hooking things up and getting started. I'm freaking out that I have been feeding LO milk that passed through these parts for who knows how long. And I am seriously going to cry when I get home and pour these 12+ ounces down the sink.
Now I don't know what milk in my freezer stash is also potentially contaminated too...

Ugh.
