@Pumuckl: Thanks, the hangry superpowers thing seems really plausible here.

An update if anyone comes across this in the same situation - not swaddling has kicked my ass for the past two days so I'm waving the white flag and have decided to keep swaddling for now. Last night, he was up every two hours and I was losing it so I brought him into bed with me, where he slept well but I did not, because I'm so paranoid about bedsharing (I am a pretty heavy sleeper). Of the non-optimal options - swaddling or bedsharing or waking constantly - swaddling seems like the best one right now. LO hasn't flipped on his stomach once so I really think it was a fluke. I'm pretty excited to get through this phase...

@hummusgirl: I'd also see if it happens again. And I have noticed that they tend to develop crazy powers when they are angry (hangry ;) ). So maybe you could unswaddle if you go make the milk. I kept my DD swaddled although she could roll because she would otherwise not sleep but she never rolled swaddled. Once she did that we moved to a Zippy at 6 months. Now she sleeps on her belly (13m).

@Mrs.KMM: That's encouraging. I hope it goes as smoothly for us!

@AggieDaze: He's not swaddled in the swing. He's unswaddled right now though, finally sleeping. Fingers crossed he keeps it up.

@Mrs.Someone: Good to know on the zipadee, I may look into it if the sleep sack doesn't work.

@MrsSRS: @BadgerMom: This is what I was hoping to hear, but I'm just so paranoid I can't bring myself to keep swaddling even though I'm sure it was just a fluke! I may change my tune if he doesn't sleep though... right now he's asleep unswaddled so maybe we'll be ok. I keep asking my husband, Are you SURE he flipped? I will look into the Merlin too.

I'd wait until it happened a second time, just in case it was some freak accident, then switch to a Merlin sleep suit. It made my swaddle addict baby happy and she slept as well as she did in the miracle blanket.

Did he flip while swaddled? If so, it's time to stop :( if he wasn't swaddled when he flipped, I'd say it's ok to continue. DS flipped in the swaddle at about 5mo. Sleep without was crap until I got a Zipadeezip. Life saver :)

@hummusgirl: Yeah, I feel like you have to stop :( I can't believe LO rolled over that early.

When he's in the swing, is he swaddled?

When you put him to sleep, is he completely asleep? Or drowsy but awake? I've read that unswaddled sleeping is easier at night vs. naps - hope that's true for you!!

We stopped swaddling as soon as DD could flip. We just stopped cold turkey - no swaddle and just put her down in a zip-up footed sleeper. She actually started sleeping better than before!

LO2 is 2 months old and has been sleeping like a champ in his crib, swaddled in a miracle blanket with white noise and a paci. Well this morning, LO was fussing, my husband got up to make him a bottle (he is formula-fed), and in the time it took to make a bottle, LO rolled onto his tummy. He hasn't ever done this before, but we should stop swaddling now, right? And if so, any success stories on how to get a young baby to sleep well without the swaddle? Right now I'm trying to get him to nap in a sleep sack with wings around his body but arms out, and it's not going well. Today I've just had him nap in the swing and the Beco, but want to keep him in his crib (in our room) for nighttime.

My LO1 was swaddled for 5 months so this is new...
