Ohhhhhh my goodness. New formula = one wakeup only last night. Even in the footie PJ's instead of the merlin. We are quite happy over here! She still fussed some like before but it's signs that point to reflux more likely. Can't wait to see what the ped says monday.

@kjpugs: I'm so sorry you are all going through this, it's so hard to see then in pain/uncomfortable and not know how to help! It sounds like you are really intuitive about her needs and I know you'll have her feeling better in no time! And omg I am so impressed that she's strong enough to roll in the suit! Super Bitty!

I'm glad you're seeing another ped! For us, Zantac was magical and while they told me it could take a few days, the day of her first dose was the last epic reflux related cry fest. I hope you get an answer

@erinpye: thanks! I will keep pushing that issue. I had the odds against me to begin with with BF (I have PCOS so my supply was always majorly low) but it's good to know that that could be a factor here STILL, so I can keep looking into it. I appreciate the info!

THanks everyone for the responses and support! I called our ped this AM after a horrible night of wakeups every 3 hours (VERY unlike her. Her sleep was off but her stretches were up to 10 hours!!!!) Anyway, the ped was also not convinced it's milk sensitivity either. Obviously serious milk allergies have severe symptoms but hers are milder, which could be milk sensitivity or reflux. They agreed that they think that might be the case. They said if she wasn't liking the alimentum that I should go back to what she does like and we made an appointment for Monday AM to evaluate her. And it's NOT with the crappy pediatrician that I didn't like from last time. I started her on Similac Total Comfort (thanks @daniellemybelle: for the info on it!) and she seems to like it. She's been MOSTLY down for 2 hours now. Here's hoping she has a better night, and we'll see what Monday brings. Not sure how they evaluate for either way this could go, but we shall see! Let me know if there's anything specific I should ask about.

@kjpugs: because their latch (on bottle or breast) is restricted due to an anchored tongue, causing them to swallow air as they feed. It can also majorly play a role in dimished supply because baby can't stimulate and empty the breast effectively. You need to make sure to find someone trained in looking for it though- I even had a pediatrician look for it specifically at my request, and tell me no. This website is a great source of info: http://www.kiddsteeth.com. Good luck and no matter what's going on, I hope it gets settled soon!

@blackbird: the more I read the more I am thinking it's reflux. It makes sense why the nights have been so bad- she lays down after eating as opposed to being held upright. She took a lot of crib convincing early on which made us think it might be reflux. We have an appt Monday to investigate :)

@erinpye: that's interesting- I didn't know lip/tongue tie could effect babies with gas? I wonder how that works? I always suspected LO had one because she couldn't get anything from BF (so I EP for 3 months until I lost my supply.) I will ask about it- we have an appt Monday.

@MamaMagpie: I agree I don't think she liked the taste of it. The increased gassiness was concerning, though :( We switched formula and tonight is going better. Oh and E was rolling to her side in the Merlin so we figured better safe than sorry. I hope she does better tonight (Every 3 hours last night... anything else is better!)

The arching, sleep issues, and screaming is what we had with reflux. Medicine fixed it immediately. Sorry you're in such a bad spot-it really is trial and error sometimes.

The arching, unsettled sleep, screaming and vomiting sound like more of a physical issue. Have you had LO checked for GERD or tongue and lip ties? Mine was like that and 3 pediatricians failed to catch her upper lip tie and posterior tongue tie- just kept upping her Zantac meds, which did nothing. Once her ties were revised, the vomiting and reflux stopped, she ate without arching, flailing and screaming, and finally had settled sleep.

You've gotten some really great advice/insight here and I'm trying to get out the door for work so I haven't read all of them and maybe this has already been said -- but it sounds to me like she simply doesn't like the taste of the alimentum! I'd stop that unless totally medically necessary, which it sounds like it's not at this point. In regards to the waking screaming -- I immediately though of what you said the sleep consultant said about ditching the sleep suit. Just because she can roll without the suit on doesn't mean she can roll WITH it on. Babies that age usually aren't ready for much movement in their sleep and the reason the Merlin's suit is effective is because it inhibits movement. She'd have to get much stronger to be able to roll over in the suit and then, yes, it would be time to take her out of it. I suspect she's waking herself up and is screaming because she's pretty mad about it :(

No matter what, big 'ol hugs to you mama! This has to be rough :( I hope it all gets figured out really soon!

@T.H.O.U.: my biggest thing is, how can it be worse when on a food that's supposed to make it better? It was never "she's allergic to milk" it was a suspected sensitivity. Based on her reaction to the Alimentum I'm not so sure anymore :(

I did just put in a call to our ped's office and am waiting for the doctor to call me back. I honestly would prefer to try going back to a "normal" formula and seeing then some other ways to try to treat it. We can always go back to the liquid Alimentum or another similar.

@Mrs. Taco: thanks! It's good info to have. I've loved two of the peds we've seen (larger practice) but the one from last time was a huge "NEVER AGAIN!" I'd love to have the name in case we have any future problems and want a second opinion.

We had the best luck with Gerber Good Start Gentle formula. I'm not sure if you've tried that one yet, but that's the formula that we gave my son and he did really well with it. He would drink any formula we gave him, but this one seemed to be the easiest on his belly. Reflux/spitting up was never an issue for us, but he was sensitive to dairy when breastfeeding (I had to omit milk from my diet) and he was a little gassy when we initially made the switch to formula.

@daniellemybelle: true that! Our GI and nutritionist stated that since their is milk in it still, which has been altered to make it hypoallergenic, if they child is sensitive enough it will still both them. Rare, but possible. That actually sums up my baby, rare but possible :)

@kjpugs: Oh man, I am so sorry you are going through this. First, there are wayyyy to many variables at play. We found ourselves in the EXACT same position (just different variables). M is on prevacid and it has been amazing. Honestly, I don't know what symptoms were the reflux or milk allergy. Here is what he had: projectile vomiting, mucus stool, blood in stool that we never saw but test showed, arching, HORRIBLE gas, fussiness, and refusal to eat. At 6 weeks I diagnosed him with milk allergy (he can thank DH for that) and switched him to Isomil. We saw huge changes but we still had all the symptoms, just not as much. Then he got a stomach bug which according to our GI set off a soy allergy (again, thanks DH) and he projectile vomited every feeding for 3 weeks before we saw a pediatric GI. Before seeing her our pediatrician put us on Nutramigen or Alimentum (our choice). We started with Alimentum and he hated the taste but warmed up to it in a day or two. Then I saw that Nutramigen was cheaper and we had coupons. He had a horrible reaction to Nutramigen. He was covered in eczema and hives, bloody stool I could see, vomiting, miserable. Our GI put us on Neocate and Prevacid and it has been life changing. Hes drinking 6 oz bottles, has normal stool, the gas is almost gone, he is happy all the time, and his eczema cleared up.

I was shocked at the price of Nutramigen/Alimentum but now would KILL to only be paying that. Neocate is $155 for 4 cans. Each can is 14oz. M drinks 6 oz bottles and 1 can last two days. The prevacid is fairly cheap, our insurance covers most of it.

Our pediatrician always had us switch cold turkey, especially if you are suspecting food allergy. He says it takes up to 10 days to see a difference and that things will get worse before they get better. I can also tell you that the 4 month sleep regression was hell over here. He was up every 2 hours, never happy, crushing formula, and tired all the time. Then one night (3 weeks to the day) it just went away. All week he has been back to 2 MOTN feeds (12 and 4) and last night he only had 1!

ETA: we had a ton of tests done to rule out any medical reason for the symptoms. We ruled out polynoric stanosis (spelling?) by u/s, digestive track issues by a barium swallow and xrays, blood tests which came back with 0 food allergies but are unreliable at such a young age, stool tested for blood, multiple weigh ins and visits a week until we saw a positive change, a u/s of the brain due to the flat spot, etc. but honestly, looking back none of it was as horrible as it felt at the time and the change in him was soooo worth it.

If you are switching because you think she has a milk allergy the any combination of formulas (even a 5:1 ratio) is giving her milk proteins. I don't know if you can rule out the new formula until the old milk formula is out of her system.

Like i said though I don't have experience here and can't imagine seeing her in pain. Like that.

@kjpugs: your poor sweet baby! We had similar issues with C for about a month, and she was EBF. I never figured it out, she just outgrew it, but it was so hard to watch. I will say she was up every few hours the night we got rid of the Merlin suit. We started putting her in a halo sleep sack with the swaddle arms around her chest, arms free, and that helped.

And my friends son had a lot of spit up and tummy issues and had to be on neocate. It's really really expensive so I hope something else works better.

Up every 3 hours or less 4 times last night to eat plus up to fuss a lot more. Up for the day at 6:30. She hasn't been up that often since she was a week old. And we've attempted other sleepwear with her. I just can't believe this is not formula related after all this. I also can't function like a human today. No happies to be had over here.

@kjpugs: It also doesn't have corn in it, which must have been a factor. Either way it smells like raw potatoes. And I forgot to mention that having an upset tummy/reflux can sometimes lead to increased eating. I guess the sucking of a bottle is comforting and if they're belly hurts they get confused as to what they actually need. R did he same thing. I really had to hold him back when it was bothering him, because overrating just made it worse.

Poor sweetie! I don't have any advice except that S has done really well on Total Comfort, as I've mentioned to you before. She was very colicky as a newborn & it really improved when we switched. I suspect she has a slight dairy sensitivity because in addition to tummy problems she has ezcema & cradle cap. But from all my research, if they have a serious issue that would warrant a hypoallergenic formula like Alimentum, you'd have serious MSPI symptoms. It seems like E has always been a really happy healthy baby so I wonder if that is really the issue? I wish I could be of more help!

We dealt with very similar symptoms to you for weeks, and the switch to Alimentum was awful. Same upset screaming, projectile vomiting and vomiting out of his nose, etc. It was awful and I really feel for you because reflux sucks. For real sucks. But we made the switch from the powder to the ready mix and it was like night and day. Our ped also gave us the option to try meds, which come with their own issues, or try adding a tablespoon of rice cereal, and so we tried the latter. It also helped immensely. But that's definetly something to discuss with her ped. I'm sorry you're having to figure this out!
