@lindseykaye: I remember reading this when I was having the same issue with the LO I nanny. He slept on his side/tummy with his momma too but needless to say it didn't make me feel less paranoid. I think I checked on him every 10 minutes for months.

That is awesome! Hope you're continuing to get sweet sweet sleep!

We started putting l on his side and he sleep 75% better. When he can roll over I'm going to try tummy. He hates his back sleep!

we put LO on her tummy for naps at an early age too- it was the only way i could put her down and she would sleep for awhile! i think it was around 8 weeks? she slept MUCH better that way, but i watched the montior like a hawk for awhile. so glad to hear he's sleeping better on his tummy! as long as there are no fluffy blankets or loose bedding in the crib, he should be fine and should be able to move his head side to side.

You are not a bad mommy, as long as she is able to roll both ways, let her sleep the way she's comfortable! Yes they say back is best, but as long as you are watching her, I think tummy is okay too :)

LO has slept on her tummy from early on. She rolled early (both ways) and once she was out of her swaddle there was no stopping her. Since then I have put her to sleep on her belly and though she still had a rough few months there before sleep training, it was still WAY better than before trying to get her to sleep on her back. Homegirl was literally stretching and writhing to turn over and we would struggle to get her to sleep on her back, fighting her instints.
Mommy guilt absolved.

(I also read recently a very thorough article discussing that the SIDS risk of belly sleeping is greatest when a caregiver puts a baby to sleep on their belly who isn't used to it and doesn't do it on their own. I can't find the link but it made me feel better about my choices.)

N has always slept better on his tummy. The worst nights for our sleeping was when we put him on his back to sleep. I apparently preferred to sleep on my tummy as a baby as well. I know all the research says back to sleep, but apparently N didn't read the same thing.....Enjoy the sleep momma!

@grizz: I used to put LO to sleep on her belly. Most babies just prefer this, yes it isnt as safe as putting them on their back but I think as long as you have your eye on them and they know how to roll both ways, its fine

I get all the "bad mommy" guilt when LO was a baby too, and in my mind I even judged my friend who told me how her baby slept so much better (because it somehow soothes the colic) when she let him sleep on his tummy and suggested I should do the same.

Looking back, I don't think it is a big deal!! As long as you pay attention and check on him, and they are already rolling around, it is OK. The "back is best" is more for people who does not pay as much attention, the type who would forget their babies in the car. If we pay attention, it is OK I think.

So you are not a bad mom! You just want your baby to be comfortable

I shouldn't be surprised, I'm a belly sleeper and even while pregnant I'd wake up at 9 months, laying on top of the basketball. I don't even know how I managed that!
