I would also recommend YNAB (you need a budget). You can try it out for free for a month. You manually input all transactions. To add cells of the same color requires a macro function.

@NaturallyCathy: You can input your checks into it just like you do in exel (putting in the amount and description) and it will keep track of that for you too. Just in case you get tired of excel. :)

@cmomma17: @Arden: I looked at it and yes, it does look super simple but call me old fashioned - I pay most of my bills by check instead of online! I just like seeing it all out in black and white. Nothing fancy.

@MaisyMay: @yoursilverlining: Thank you, that's what I was trying to figure out!

@Freckles: I was/still am trying to figure out Excel to track our purchases. I have it set up like our bank statement - a column for the dates, check numbers (if applicable), a column for the description (where the money is going), the debit, credit, and the balance. Then I was color coding them and trying to figure out the balance for, say, groceries so far this month.

I'm also trying to figure out how to make it automatically take the credit/debit and make it total it in the balance for me...

Either use SUM like @MaisyMay said, or if your credit purchases are in different columns, or your balance cell is in a different column, when you click on your balance cell, type = then highlight the cells you want to add in, put + between them, then hit enter.

I think this is what you are asking:
Question: How to Quickly Sum Columns or Rows of Numbers in Excel?
Answer:
The SUM function provides a quick way to sum columns or rows of numbers in an Excel worksheet.

Placing this under money since it's about money but it's mainly dealing with Microsoft Excel.

I need someone to walk me through this. I know there's an easier way for me to do this - formulas already in the program - that will keep tabs on my credit/debit input and total it up in the balance column. But I can't seem to find it!

Any ideas?
