@pastemoo: Hi there, sorry for the late response. I was using a first gen babyhawk and I would have loved to have continued using it but my LO was becoming too independent to want to be strapped in once she started walking and running. I think I used it up until she was 16 months but the woman I purchased it from used it til her daughter was 2.5 years old.

:) I have also gone through a bazillion carriers.
I am currently addicted to woven wraps.
@Red: What kind of mei tai did you get? Do you still use it now?

@looch: You can always start with the hip scoot method below until you're confident enough to go straight to a back carry. You can make the first few attempts backed up against a bed - if your wild man makes a run for it, he'll at least have a soft landing.

@Red: I need to attempt back carries...I don't feel confident doing them alone right now because my son is a wild man, and I am worried about keeping him safely contained and not hurting myself in the process.

Any advice? We have an Ergo, btw.

@tequiero21: I bought an older version Babyhawk carrier which has shorter straps and no baby headrest. It works just fine but if I was buying one new, I would actually get the Toddlerhawk cause it has a longer body panel for older babies; you can just roll up the bottom for when baby is smaller. IMO, any mei tai carrier would work since it's pretty hard to mess up a design as simple as a square panel and 4 straps.

@looch: She's 22.5 lbs so you'll definitely feel the weight but it's distributed evenly across your hips so it's not uncomfortable. Of course, the longest LO has stayed in the carrier thus far has only been 45 minutes so I can't attest to comfort for really long treks.

How many pounds is your LO? My son is about 24 lbs. now at the same age and carrying is starting to be a chore!

@chopsuey119: The ergo (and most of the other soft-structured carriers) are based on the original mei tai design so think of a mei tai as an ergo without all the bells and whistles :)

I used a SleepyWrap (moby-like) when DS was really little. I have an Ergo that I love now, and a woven wrap that I have not figured out yet, but would be great when DS is at that stage you mentioned. I really hate the stroller (love our stroller, just hate to use it lol) and prefer to carry/babywear whenever possible.

So, I've owned and used a few baby carriers: I loved the Moby when LO was <2 months cause it kept her really snug to me but it was cumbersome to put on with all that fabric. The Baby bjorn Air was really versatile from 1-4 months but she got heavy quick and started to hurt my back. The Baby bjorn comfort carrier was cool from months 5-8 but then it was summer and the thick padding got to be too hot, plus carrying LO got to be inconvenient since she's so big and heavy; AND, it was too bulky to tote around so I rarely used it.

Fast forward to 1 month ago, my LO is now 14 months and walking, but not walking enough to forgo the stroller and not patient enough to stay in the stroller.....which means I end up carrying her quite a bit --> not good for my back. So, I started to look into another carrier. I've been wanting to get a mei tai for a while now but I was afraid that that my LO has outgrown being carried in a carrier or that the straps would be too difficult to manage. After stalking craigslist for a couple weeks, I finally found a used one that I bought for $30 (didn't want to buy it new in case I was disappointed).

I've been using it for 2 weeks now and I absolutely LOVE it. The straps are daunting at first but after a couple of tries, it's incredibly easy to put on and take off, not to mention so easy to get a perfect fit every time no matter how big/small your baby is. The back carry is even easy after you get over the fear of dropping your baby.

I love how versatile it is (I've used front, back, and side carries) and how compact it is compared to other carriers. LO fell asleep in the car earlier today and I put on the mei tai and transferred her into it (still sleeping) and went shopping (No more waiting in the car 'til she wakes up, Yay!). She woke up 30 minutes later and was content to just hang out while we shopped. When she started fidgeting, I removed her from the mei tai, rolled it up and stuffed it in my diaper bag. IN MY DIAPER BAG!!! None of the soft-structured baby carriers out there would ever fit in my diaper bag!

Ok, I'll stop. I just wanted to share my mei tai love with you ladies. It's old school compared to all the baby carrying options out there but it's been around for a long time for a reason - it's simple and it works :)
