@MaisyMay: Sounds like you've gotten a lot of great advice. Just wanted to add my two cents. We turned our closet into a nursery, and our daughter slept in it until she was 8 months old (she outgrew that darn mini crib). It had a window and double doors, so it was a good sized little closet, and it worked out well for us! We left the door open at night and cracked it during naps. We had high ceilings and a draft window, so we weren't so concerned about circulation. On the rare hot days, the window was open and we had a fan going.

Thanks all.

DH and I were talking about it more, and did come up with the idea of putting a curtain inside the doorway and leaving the door open when we are all asleep. We do have a monitor that we haven't even opened since her crib has been in our room.

@Mrs. Jacks: Our apartment is small and has a central furnace, plus we use fans to cool as needed.

@looch: LO is pretty happy in her crib most of the time. She's slept there since about 6 weeks, minus a few odd nights.

@PurplePeony: I've searched their site, some great ideas. It's what DH interested in the idea.

@MaisyMay: I slept in my crib in a large hall closet (with a window) for the first year of my life-- that's what happens when you're the 5th out of 6 kids!

I think leaving the door totally open would suffice. The fan on low would circulate air in and out of the closet. I assume you have a video monitor?

@MaisyMay: you also want the air to be moving in and out of the space at all times so it's not just about making sure the air is moving at certain parts of the day. I would suggest putting a vent onto the door itself so there is somewhere for air to move out of the space.

Any plans to move into a bigger place in the future? Are there no other spaces in your apartment her crib can stay?

ETA: love the idea of hanging a blackout curtain instead.

I don't see an issue with it, as long as you take care of ventilation.

Could you put her crib in the living room, with a divider? Is it big enough for that?

DS is in our walk in closet. :)
It's about 15 feet from our bed, spacious, well ventilated and we never close the door.
It's worked SUPER well for us.

I don't think it's a crazy idea at all. If you're limited on space and need the baby out of your room, it's actually a pretty clever idea.

With my luck, I'd do the whole prep and my kid would boycott the crib!

I would remove the door if you can, and do a blackout curtain on a rod, as a pp suggested. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the door closed because if in the case of an emergency, professional rescuers might not think to look in the closet for a baby.

Apartment Therapy has a bunch of posts about closet nurseries -- just go to the main site and do a search and they should come up. I think most people remove the doors and use curtains instead, but I'd imagine if you didn't want to take the door off the hinges, you could hang a curtain behind the door. The curtain would block some light but not as much air movement during naps and nighttime, and you could close the door to hide everything the rest of the time.

I'd personally leave the door open all night. Maybe close it until she falls asleep and then open it all night and during naps.

Oh and also: could you remove the curtain and hang a blackout curtain?
That's what I'd do. No door, hang a dark curtain and possibly a small fan in there on low.

@MaisyMay: could you leave the door open after you go to bed yourselves? As long as it doesn't get hot in there, seems like it would be ok to close/mostly close the door for a few hours - especially with a fan. I agree that maybe you should try it out yourself for at least a night or two.

@78h2o: Thanks. :) I'm in an apartment, so it's not like I can drill vents. If LO needs to stay in with us, we'll make it work, but it would be neat if we could move her out too.

@mrbee: I don't know a lot about ventilation, but research is showing that the purpose of ventilation is to remove any foul/noxious air and replace it with fresh air. If a door is left open during the day and a fan is used to move the air at night, does that sound adequate? We're still trying to determine the feasibility.

I would totally do this if we didn't have the space for a nursery!

I've seen bloggers living in NYC doing it. For example:

Yeah, ventilation would be my concern. That being said, I slept in a small walk-in closet for a few years as a toddler - I think maybe from age 3-4? I still remember it and thought it was super cool, lol. It had a giraffe painted on the wall and I think my mattress took up the whole floor. We were living in a small cottage while my dad built a house on the same property.

@Mrs. Jacks: When I research how to ventilate a room, it says that a high fan would be acceptable, as long as it doesn't blow directly on her. Does that sound right to you?

We live in a one bedroom apartment. LO is nearly 7 months old and is becoming a pretty good sleeper, usually doing nearly 10 hours before waking for a bottle and then going down for another 1-2. She's been in our room and we have a whole area for her, but it's starting to really impact our "personal" time and our sleep (she's noisy!).

How crazy would it be to turn our hall storeroom into a closet nursery? It's about 4 1/2' x 5' and would easily fit her mini-crib. We'd leave her dresser in our room. There's a hanging bar and lots of shelves. There is no overhead light, but there is an outlet for a lamp. It's about 10' down the hall from our room, with the bathroom in between.

So, crazy or not such a bad idea?
