@Truth Bombs: Thanks! In the city where I first looked into it, you had to have lived in the city for a certain amount of time and find your own sponsors. We'll have moved again by next September so I'll have to check it out in our new town.

@HabesBabe: omg WHAT? I've never heard of ANYONE throwing up in their first CF class (including the 62 year old woman in mine). You scale things to your ability, so if all you can do your first class is 4 pushups on your knees, great! Tomorrow you'll do 5. It's all about doing what you can do, and really fun! I promise!

@HabesBabe: some of the great hobby suggestions still are quite solitary, even in a group environment. So I's agree with Crossfit, rock climbing, and hiking groups for more adult interaction! My cousin recently quit her job for a similar reason. She literally only talked to another person maybe 15 min a day total! Abd her husband travels for work a lot. My other cousins join soccer and softball leagues and they all are very active with huge groups! You can always join our DL moms hobby (heeheehee), but I think you're up and starting your day much earlier than us.

@Pancakes: The joining process depends on your city. Some will require you to find your own sponsors. But in my city they will just pair you up with someone if you don't know any current members. The details should all be available on the website for your local league. We add new members annually in September, so you just missed it but other Leagues may do it differently. The first year has a lot of commitments where you learn about the league and how everything operates. It definitely is a significant time commitment but I love it. Moving isn't a big deal, once you're an active member it's very easy to transfer from one League to another!

I definitely echo the others who have said active things like crossfit/adult recreation, gym classes. If you are consistent in the gym class/time you choose, you start to meet the same people and really band together! Everyone starts are unfit, don't worry about that! Basically everyone I meet at the gym is so supportive and welcoming. If you do an instructor led class, I suggest introducing yourself before hand and letting them know you're new. In my experience, they either look out for you, or let a more experienced member help you. And your exercise tolerance/strength builds pretty fast :). Moms on the run is also a national coalition of moms who walk/run together - and a lot of the groups have moms who aren't even really runners - they want to get out with other moms/kids.

A lot of dance studios these days are offering beginner adult classes. I have been itching to try the adult ballet class at a local ballet studio! I think it would be so fun.

The city website and park/rec department also have information on joining adult recreation like gym volleyball, soccer, softball leagues, etc.

What about a book club? A lot of libraries may have information on that? Or if you have interested friends - you could start your own!

@Pancakes: it depends where you live and how big the league is. Some cities you need to know someone in the league to refer you but others you may be able to contact and attend an info session. I agree with @Truth Bombs: it is a great way to get involved in the community. Through it I helped lead a Girl Scout troop, tutored, helped develop a leadership program for women, helped organize an inaugural ball, etc.
I was able to transfer from one league to another fairly easily when I moved.

I took a series of beginner pole dancing classes with a friend. It was great to meet people from all walks of life who wanted a different kind of workout and i definitely got a lot out of the class including a toned core. My friend ended up loving it more than I did and went through at least 8 levels of classes. The place that offers it also has other types of classes - cardio funk, aerials, etc. I think they have groupon, living social deals every now and then.

@HabesBabe: does your city have a Junior League? I'm in the Junior League and love it. It's a great opportunity to meet other women, and give you a sense of purpose as its a volunteer/philanthropy based organization. They also do tons of social activities from book clubs and dinner clubs to group outings to workout classes or hikes, etc. So you can sort of pick and choose which ones you want to sign up for as they pop up.

@erinbaderin: .@sunny: @HLK208: I would love to get into yoga. I took a few classes while pregnant and it kicked my ass! Plus, it would be nice to actually wear my yoga pants to places other than Target and Yogurtland.

@JoJoGirl: uhhh does it matter if I am the least fit I've ever been in my entire life? I mean, I've never been fit to begin with (marching band was my PE in high school), but I am pretty squishy. I know it's a rite of passage to throw up during your first CF class, but I have a feeling I would do that every single class.

@avivoca: I suck at running! I did the marines 10k mud run a few years ago (pre-kids) and it took me TWO HOURS. I feel like a zombie could outrun me. But it's something cheap that I could try out!

@math.nerd: I'm going to an OC bout tomorrow... figured I should at least watch it live before I show up to the first class like an idiot!

THANKS SO MUCH, everyone! There have been some great suggestions in here and I'm so glad that some of you have so many passions! I just need to get off my ass and do something!

Roller Derby!!! I don't know where you live, but in LA the local league has lessons for beginners. I know that the ladies seem intimidating, but, in my experience, they were all lovely. I really enjoyed the few classes I took. It's such a cool sport and amazing exercise.
Let us know what you decide to try!

I enjoy counted cross stitch. It's easier than knitting in my opinion and you get to make pictures. The downside is there is no adult interaction.

I've done a few painting classes with friends. Those are a blast, even if you're terrible at it. It seems to be fairly popular. We usually paint and drink at the same time making it much more enjoyable.

I work from home and my son is in daycare 2-3 days a week. My biggest support system / other adult interaction, is the moms I've meet through the midwives clinic here. They offer a book club, babywearing group, peer support group for moms that meet every other week. It's been great to find my "tribe" of like minded moms. My business is my hobby... it's what I put most of my "extra" time into (if there is extra) but honestly it's my focus. Maybe get out to some women's business/networking groups? Lunch and learns... business resource center might be a good place to start. Not that you necessarily want to start a business but it would be a great place to make some new connections and learn new things.
