@Cherrybee: When I was working at a daycare we had babies learning to walk along with some walkers. One baby was getting the courage to take a few steps but suddenly tripped and bashed his forehead into the edge/knob of a play kitchen set. The hysterics he was in and the horrible guilt I had for not somehow catching him! He got a nice shiner but was completely fine a few minutes (and many cuddles) later. Learning to be mobile is so hard!

Accidents happen , I know it's hard not to beat yourself up over it, but it's going to happen... I posted a thread recently about how frequently DS was falling and hitting his head and stuff. Everyone pretty much said it happens. I talked to his pediatrician (LO busted his head an hour before his ped appt, just cruising like he always does, he just got his legs twisted and face-planted... You know I felt like mom of the year taking him in with a goose egg!) his pediatrician just chuckled and asked how learning to walk was going.

My boy is all rough and tumble and pretty fearless. He loves climbing and cruising, going down the slide, diving into the ball pit, I'm trying so hard to let go of the fear of him getting hurt and trying to just let him learn (within reason) but it's hard!

I'm sure E will be crawling soon, she sounds like such a smart, motivated, persistent girl! Hang in there, Mama!

She will get it, you didn't cause this with a jumperoo or less tummy time (unless we're talking hours in a jumperoo which I highly doubt- mine spent a good amount of time in there as well), and accidents happen. My daughter is very accident prone. Those kinds of things happen and she usually just shakes it off within a few minutes. Sometimes bruises are involved and then that's when I feel bad about it...unless its on her legs evaluate she always manages to get bruises there.

@Cherrybee: Don't worry, mama! We never scheduled tummy time for E and he figured things out after awhile. But let me tell you, gravity is not on his side, lol! He has face planted and dive-bombed more times than I can count.

They are so much more pliable and resilient than we are! This is what I tell myself to not beat myself up because whether we like it or not, slips and falls are their reality.

I also felt bad that I didn't give my LO enough tummy time etc, because he wasn't crawling for the longest time...but then when he started, I was like, what was I in a hurry for? ;)

Hugs!

She will be fine and you are not a terrible mother! I can't remember what my son's first accident was, but I remember feeling totally like shit about it and my husband was very rational and said it would be the first of many. And of course he was right (Hello broken leg at 2.5! Not on our watch though.).

Also, I don't think my son properly crawled until about 10 months, so no worries there about what you did or didn't do to help her get to that point!

Thank you so much everyone. I do feel much better now - and you were right, she woke up and was fine (although she has a proper shiner coming - her cheek is all swollen and bruised).

@daniellemybelle: Haha! In the UK, bonking is a crass slang term for sex! :silly:

@Foodnerd81: Oh, I agree! I feel so mean. Then when she's freaking out, waving her arms and legs about, I just ignore her and leave her there for a few more minutes. Mean mummy.

@rahlyrah: Oh lord, no! Not falling from standing, I can't bear it!

@Trailmix: A new level of annoying!!!

@oscarthegoon: @Kemma: Thanks you two. I read your posts when I was really upset, before E woke up and I had to log off. They really helped.

It's ok! Babies are resilient and that will be the first of many accidents. I know how you feel, C is desperate to move on his own, but he can't crawl yet either. Not even an army crawl. He rolls across the room though, and frequently bangs his head that way!

C is the exact same way- she wants so badly to crawl but can't quite get the pieces all together. And she's been sleeping on her tummy for months so plenty of tummy time. They will get there on their own pace.

I was just telling Dh how mean I feel lately, always putting her favorite things just out of reach. We haven't had any crawling injuries (YET) but she has rolled off our rug and bonked her head on the wood floor several times, not to mention the time I managed to somehow smam my mouth into to te of her head in the carrier. Then there was the time she face planted in the tub water and scared herself while I was inches away.

She will be more than over it when she wakes up, lunging at more toys. Hang in there.

Brady got a black eye when he was first learning to crawl. I was literally 6 inches away from him and couldn't catch him in time. Now that he is a proficient crawler, he still face plants on a daily basis. Don't get me started on all the falls from trying to stand (he let's go) and cruising. Get used to it, my love! They bounce back quickly :)

Mine bonk their heads all the time! What happened was just an accident, they happen a lot with babies. Don't cry, E will be fine and crawling soon (and it's a whole new level of annoying once they start crawling so enjoy the limited mobility while it lasts!)

None of this is your fault. She will crawl when she crawls and none of what you have done will change that. In the child development class I took, they made a big deal out of not putting babies into positions they can't get themselves in and out of. Tummy time is a position we force on babies but they can't get into and it of for a long time. So that isn't something you did wrong.

As for the owie, it is the first of many to come. The first is always the hardest and there are so many scary and sad ones coming. I have a boy and he is all rough and tumble. His first owie was a similar thing at his babysitters house. He fell forward onto a block and cut his lip. She called freaking out (there was a lot of blood). But he nursed and he was fine. Two years later he was at school and was asked to put a toy away outside. He just tripped over his own feet and fell face first into a plastic picnic table. The worst scrape to his lip (he looked like he had a hitler stash).

He is still alive and he doesn't even remember. And one day he will break his arm or leg.

Babies are resilient and I think that just about every mother on the HB Boards has seen their poor LO donk their head at some stage or other! My own girl fell off our front step and gave herself a monster graze on her forehead (she's also bounced off the bed, lost arguments with our cat, fallen off our kitchen chairs etc, etc)!

Baby E will be fine and I'm sure she'll be crawling before you know it - and then the fun really begins!

please try not to beat yourself up! accidents happen, there is no lasting harm, and 9 months is not late to crawl. i'm sure most if not all of us have accidentally contributed to a minor injury. she has already forgotten about the bump and soon you both will be proudly and happily celebrating when she does crawl.

E is having a much needed nap, after a traumatic event - and I'm just sat here, fighting back the tears.

She's trying so hard to crawl. She's desperate to. It makes her so, so frustrated that she just can't do it. I hate seeing her struggle and I have to push any thoughts that it's my fault she isn't crawling at 9 months - I let her spend too much time in the Jumperoo, I frequently cut tummy time short because she hated it - out of my head. Thoughts like this, while probably true, are not helpful, I get it.

But earlier today, we were up in the play room and she she was trying so, so hard. I was trying to encourage her by putting a plastic stacking cup just out of her reach and putting my arm behind her feet so she could push off. Well, she launched forward and landed, face first, on the upturned bottom of the stacking cup (it has a thin ridge bit running around it to enable it to be stacked into a tower). She was hysterical and has a huge red mark on her face, by her eye. Oh God, her poor sad face crying.... it hurts my heart to recall it.

Please tell me she will get the hang of it soon and that I'm not the crappiest mum in the world for hurting my baby because I pushed her too hard (after not giving her the opportunities she needed to get there in the first place). I don't care if she doesn't crawl until she's ten but she does, she is so frustrated.... I want it for her

Ugh! I'm a mess now!! My poor sad baby. :crying:
