Reviving this thread bc I need help too. My 8.5 month old has been going through this since the week of thanksgiving. We've tried everything including cio and nothing is working. She has 2 teeth, is not sick. Same bedtime routine. She refuses dad at every MOTN waking, I don't know what to do anymore, I am so tired.

@AprilFool:  so glad to hear!
That's the crazy thing with these babies. Something that works well for months (5:30pm bedtime) suddenly stops working as they develop and grow! General rule of thumb: if the behavior is still different after 2 weeks, it's likely a permanent change and not a phase (so things like bedtime, dropping naps, etc).
I think that most likely the bedtime needing to be later and the regression just happened to coincide. One prob didn't have much to do with the other. Crappy coincidence.
But you're doing great!

@mrsrain: @SweetiePie: @Shantuck: So last night he napped 3:30 - 6 and went to bed at 7:30 and we had a much better night. Still two wake ups but right back to sleep. Obviously the early night is effecting his sleep so will be waking him at 6 from now on Thanks everyone :)

I agree with others about a later bedtime. 5pm is late for a nap, but if he insists on going down then I would wake him at 5:45/6. At that age our schedule was something like this:

7:30 wake
9:00-11:00 nap
1:30-2:30 nap
4:30-5:00 nap
7:00-7:30 last nurse/bottle
7:30 bedtime
With several overnight wake ups. After the regression we worked on eliminating wake ups one by one, but some CIO was necessary for us to achieve that.

It's so hard, and you have my extreme sympathy! Good luck!

@AprilFool: I haven't read all of the respsonses so sorry if this is repetitive!
I am a HUGE proponent of early bedtime but I would say that 5:30 is pretty early! I also completely understand and agree with the short wake time when they are that age. And actually for us 2 hours was still too long of wake time at that age.
For the 2nd half of the day, my suggestion would be this based on the sample schedule you gave in one of your responses and our experience. And keep in mind you need to give anything you try 2 weeks of consistent effort before you can say it doesn't work - that's basic sleep consultant advice.

1:15-3:30 nap
5:15 - 6pm nap (gently wake at 6pm)
6:15pm start bedtime routine (everything from final feeding to bath to story - whatever your routine is. And if you don't have one, START!)
7pm should be in bed with lights out.

I've always found that taking the catnap around 5pm helped avoid any kind of witching hour and gave us a very pleasant bedtime routine experience. And having a short wake time between that cat nap and bedtime never mattered. It was still the end of the day and he was still plenty ready for bed. A 45 min nap gets you some extra time in the evening but it's not restorative enough to stay up for another 2 hours. It always worked perfectly for us.

Also, you have my sympathies. The 4 month regression was by far the hardest one on us! My overall advice is to stay mostly consistent and it will pass! But making some minor, favorable adjustments to help them through it is a good thing.

The biggest things that have helped us with sleep are get them out of our room ( and we're staying with our parents at the moment so this hasn't been easy) but I would do this by any means possible - large bathroom, large closet, etc and have dad so bedtime. Then the kids seemed not to associate it with me and feeding so closely.

Maybe you could try to gradually get him to stay up a bit later (like 15 minutes every few days). To keep him up you could do bath time at night before that last feed. Just a thought. Good luck, mama. That's tough!

I'm like you. I consider 2 wake ups a good night, 3 wake ups isn't terrible if they go right back to sleep.

But we are dealing with the same thing. Asleep and then cries after 30 min in the crib. Basically can't lay her down. Right now we are resorting to co sleeping. I'm going to maybe train after she starts and adjusts to daycare.

@travellingbee: Do I wake him up from that nap? If put him to bed at 5 for a nap he won't wake until 8 or until I go to bed. We have tried getting him up at the 8pm feed but he was still having wake ups. It might be worth trying again though

@AprilFool: I'm sorry! At that age my current LO wanted to take a 5 PM nap. You might try pushing naps back a half an hour each and see if you can get him to take a 430 nap with a little bit later bedtime. There's no way either of my kids could have had a 530 bedtime and slept well.

@Shantuck: He has always gone to bed that early no matter what I tried and used to sleep 5 - 2 feed and then till 5:30. Yesterday he woke at 6:30 and slept 8:15 till 11:30 and 1:15 till 3:30. So 5:30 yesterday was already 2 hours and any longer I would of had an overtired mess on my hands.

I don't know that I have any advice. My DS1 was like this. We constantly struggled with sleep,
and CIO didn't work because he would literally cry all night. We had a really rough first year, and a fairly rough second year. Nothing anyone told us really worked, or if it did in the short term, he'd go right back to sleeping crappy again soon. We spent quite a bit of money on sleep consultants, books, etc. In the end none of it was super helpful. Our kid just didn't fit the mold. I hope you do get some good and helpful advice, but also know that all kids are different. What worked for one person may not work for yours and of course vice versa.

We also put down around 645/7. So bedtime routine starts with enough time to account for him to be asleep in his crib by then. How many naps is he taking?

Have you tried putting him down a bit later? It might just be me but 5:30 seems really early to me. My son went down around 7 at that age. We also did a tank up feed of pumped milk (a 6 oz bottle- the biggest bottle all day). Might be worth a try.

My LO is 5 months and hit the 4 month regression at about 3.5 months. At first it was easy, just a few extra wakeups, feed and back to bed but right when I thought we were getting over it, sleep got worse. Now we are up at least 3 times a night, he is refusing to go back down and most of our days start around 4. Christmas night was our best by far, down at 5:30, up 8, 12:45 and 3 but right back to sleep. Last night was back to 8, 9:45 - 11:15, 1 and up at 4.

We have no choice but to share a room so this disturbs everyone. We haven't tried CIO because I don't think it would work, J can scream for hours. I am about ready to check myself into a hotel!!!
