@cake2017: Great idea on playing in the room!!

@gotkimchi: I was wondering about the extinction burst. And, I think we will either do no checks or just verbal checks tonight.

Also wondering if you’ve tried no checks? That seems to help with my kids, or a quick “go to sleep” over the monitor

If it seems like it’s worse on day 4 could be an extinction burst, don’t give up yet!

It is very hard! I’d suggest playing in her room more and making it a positive place! I played with LO in his crib when I was introducing him back to sleeping in it. This helped a lot. Keep up with your routine. I’d suggest not listening the entire time of crying- earphones with music playing, a shower, chores etc... it helps “pass the time”. It will get better.

@Mrs. Microscope: I would have stopped last night (it was so, so hard), but I keep reminding myself: if I go in and pick her up, I'm undoing all of this hard work we've been doing. :( I just feel like she should be improving by day 4. I feel like I'm crushing her spirit.

@SweetCaroline: I wouldn't assume ear infection (no fever, no ear tugging). But, I'm glad you brought it up. We visit the doc on Friday, and I'll have her take a quick peek.

The reason we wanted to sleep train was that she's having trouble bridging her sleep cycles (naps are only 35-45 min long, and that first 45 min wake-up at night is just her inability to get back to her next cycle). She does finally hit a stride after she gets back to sleep, and stays asleep until her 3am feeding. I'm not looking to cut that yet, and our routine at that time is great. She always goes right back to sleep.

Stick with it! She will round the corner soon!

If things are terrible still by day 10, ask again!

Oh mama. Sleep training sucks. Any chance baby has an ear infection? Wondering if there is something else at play causing the 45 minute wake up and daytime unhappiness.

I had an ear infection baby and I had to do sleep training after a visit to the doctor where they saw clear ears, so of course that always comes to mind for me!

We are sleep training our 5.5 month old this week. We're doing what most closely resembles Ferber (I didn't read the book, but we are laying down when awake, no props, intervalled check-ins (our check-ins are mostly verbal - sometimes we'll pat for 30 seconds but that seems to ramp her up)).

We've successfully removed nursing from bedtime, and I think we have a solid routine.

I've Googled "why sleep training is failing", and I feel like we have covered all of the pointers (consistent schedule, good routine, no props, laying baby down when awake, noise machine, dark room, etc.).

We're on day 4, and it's HORRIBLE! She's crying for 15-30 min before naps, generally just very unhappy during the day (she's usually such a happy baby), and at night, she's crying for 45 min, sleeping 45 min, and waking up again to cry more. As soon as we walk into the room to start the routine (sleep sack and song), she starts crying. She used to be okay being left to play for a bit on the floor (during the day if I needed to do a quick chore), and now she screams as soon as I sit her down. She's associating our room and being put down with being left alone. :(

The first few days were hard, but it seemed to get progressively better. Yesterday and today have been so, so hard. I need encouragement. I'm feeling really upset by hearing her cry.
