I just didn't realize if was infuriating on multiple levels. DH's cousin lives in Indiana and she's working on fighting this. She's written letters and is now reaching out to the media. She had a baby that had severe birth defects and was non-viable. She chose to carry to term and have him die in her arms, but it was HER CHOICE. She's sharing her story (and mine) as far and wide as she can. </p> <p>@catlady: My cousin made the same point- what possible benefit is there to this? I can only see two sort of possibilities. It reaffirms their position that a fetus (or zygote/embryo/other stage I'm forgetting) is a person, and deserves the same considerations and respectful disposal of remains that anyone else gets. That works towards their ultimate goal of fetal personhood and blanket abortion bans. Or scarier, it's a prelude to bringing in forensic vaginal examiners (as in El Salvador and other places with full abortion bans) to be sure that it was a miscarriage and not a self-induced abortion. If those types of laws were in place I would hide a miscarriage and not seek medical attention unless something seemed to be going wrong (beyond the basic wrongness of miscarriage), and this would make that illegal, and thus make it more dangerous to try to hide it because then you'd look really suspicious. But I feel like surely it's the former, not the latter. The thing I want to know is, who exactly are they trying to protect by writing a law like that? While I am 100% pro-choice, I can at least acknowledge a pro-life stance and I understand why pro-lifers try to get certain things into law (even if I disagree with them). How on earth does this aspect of the law do anything at all except cause more pain to women? I have had two early miscarriages (both around 7 or 8 weeks). The bleeding lasts for awhile, and in neither case was I able to identify what exactly was the embryo. Not to be graphic but would I have been expected to scrape the contents off my pad on the off chance that it contained fetal tissue? What about when I was at work the next day? Should I have done that in the bathroom and carried it home in a Tupperware? Or was I supposed to spend a precious vacation day or two to do this at home instead of saving my time off to spend with my two year old? Or stay home instead of doing something healing AFTER HAVING A MISCARRIAGE??</p> <p>What the holy hell kind of regulation is that? Probably written by a judgemental closeted holy roller childless man who has time to go around oppressing innocent people instead of making a productive, open-hearted contribution to society. And who has zero understanding about the physical process of having a miscarriage. It is positively medieval.
