@matador84: yes! Nursing tank under a shirt is excellent. Practically nothing hangs out, even if the baby unlatches unexpectedly. Also, maybe just try to find a quieter corner when in public so you can get used to it....like a restaurant booth, or a corner table or a shady park bench. I have no idea how many meals I had in public with DS on the boob. It does take some getting used to, but once you've tried it a few times, it's no big deal.

I spent a lot of time with other nursing moms so I wasn't the only one nursing. It made it feel less awkward. I've also nursed in my car.

I used to just go into my car to nurse. If I couldn't, I always had my nursing cover with me!

I just did it. Like anything else you're anxious about you feel a whole lot better once you've done it the first time. Now I will nurse anywhere and in front of anyone almost. It helped me to think my baby needs me and nothing else matters. Actually find it easier to nurse in front of strangers then male family haha. I tried using a A&A blanket to cover but found it made things a lot more difficult and now I use nothing. I do wear a nursing tank under a shirt all the time though so I am not showing more than I need to.

When Ellie was about ten weeks old she got RSV. We were in and out of the hospital almost daily for quite a while. On one visit, there was a felon and his gaurd in the hallway when Ellie got hungry. So... I ended up nursing in front of a prison inmate. That pretty much cured my fear of NIP. I figured if I could do it in that situation, there probably wasn't any other that was much less comfortable. I did get more at ease as time went on, for sure. Now with Lorelei I will nurse anywhere in front of anyone. Father-in-law, strangers, my dad... whatever. You can't really see anything anyway. ;)

I used a cover for a long time bc it took us such a long time to get the hang of it. After that I just did it. Honestly I was pretty nervous and scared at first....so scared he'd pop off and leave my boobnhanging out! Lol. But that never happened. And if I knew we'd need to nurse soon I'd nurse in the car before getting out so I could be more comfortable.

I started out nursing in dressing rooms. I would go to Target and just use a dressing room to nurse him. Also relative's houses and the car were easy places.

I nurse in the car, and will continue to do that or nurse in a mothers room in the mall. LO likes to fuss, so I prefer doing it in private!

@matador84: the tank under a shirt is a great tip! my son hates any sort of cover, so I always wear a flowy top shirt if I'm headed out during nursing time.

also, I have a healthy ignorance of how much people can see of me when we nurse. I choose to believe it's nothing :)

I really, really wanted to go out to eat! Haha! I wear or bring a scarf sometimes... It's easier than a blanket to cover up with.

Nursing a few times in the car definitely helped to practice. Also nursing in front of my moms group was a good first step - it was "public" but still "safe."

Funny I nursed in the car too and at friend's homes and it helped me practice for in public. I always have a tank on and shirt over so I use the pull up/pull down method. I also had to practice with a cover on because it can be kind of awkward to use and blanket-y feeling.

Another car nurser over here. I think it's so much easier than trying to keep me and LO covered in public. I still have a hard time getting comfortable without the boppy or a pillow so it's just easier to nurse in the car.

I nursed in the car a lot in the beginning. It was like the gateway drug of nursing in public. Now I'm more comfortable and would nurse more "out in the open", although the car is still a popular spot for me :)

I love nursing and I'm so thrilled that we have been doing so well. But since I'm not pumping anymore, I'm not able to leave pumped milk and LO with DH and go run errands. He's not really on a good schedule/routine yet, sometimes he goes 3-4 hours between feedings and most evenings, he cluster feeds. So since dropping the bottles and pumping last Friday, I've barely been out of the house. There was one trip that ended in him wanting fed NOW and I jetted home with him.

We've gone to the LC and the dr but that's about it. And I know I can nurse in those places easily!

I've also noticed that LO is much less patient now that we're nursing. When he was getting bottles, he'd take a paci long enough for us to prep the bottle most of the time. That doesn't work so well anymore. He wants fed NOW!

How did you get comfortable with NIP?
