We did nap training a couple months ago. She was learning to stand then also. I would lay her down one time at the first check, tell her time to go to sleep, I love you and leave. If she stood up after that....well, she eventually figured out how to get back down. I would do checks depending how much she was crying. Also, I would set a 30 min limit. If she wasn't sleeping in 30 min, I would take her out, play with her in her room, and then try again in 30-45 min. She never refused a nap 2x in a row. Often I didn't have to do a check because she would lay down and just be fussing, not crying. Good luck, I know it sucks but it will be so worth it!

We nap trained before LO had figured out how to sit, stand, or crawl in her crib so that may affect things for us... when she learned to do each of those things we had a rough go of naps again because she kept wanting to do those things. But at that point because we'd already nap trained she rarely actually cried in her crib. So I've sort of developed a 20 minute rule. If she isn't crying I give her 20ish minutes to lay back down and go to sleep and then go up and lay her down. For her-- she often does go to sleep on her own in that time and if not she will usually go to sleep once I lay her down during the check. But if she started just popping up every time I laid her down I think I'd go into full sleep training mode and only go in if she was crying (and then do the timed checks again). It does sort of suck-- but they have to learn.

ETA: because I just saw the question about checks. I think it depends on your kid. Checks are really helpful for us because LO almost always falls asleep right after a check. It's like she needs to get her frustration out then a bit of soothing and popping of the paci calms her and she can sleep. But I know for other kids it just pisses them off. If you think they don't help you, I wouldn't do them.

@Jess1483: ok! Thanks. Did you do checks? The checks are beginning to seem counterproductive.

My ped said don't set LO back down or you'll be doing it forever. He will figure it out (I was glued to the monitor, but my guy eventually let go and fell backwards into his crib, where he stayed). It could be a long one, but he'll learn. Good luck, Mama!

No experience, but personally I'd just leave him standing. If he wants to stand up, more power to him. Put on some headphones / music and set the timer for 5, 10, 15 intervals. He will hopefully get the picture eventually.

Part of the training, in my opinion, is to teach him that he needs to lay down and go to sleep during naps.

Good luck!!

I am so desperate that just this morning I decided to start nap training. Mama just can't keep going. He's been crying for 4 mins, I've done one check and had to put him back down since he pulled up to a stand. He is standing again. Do I go in more often to reposition him or do I just go in at the times checks?? Help!!! Prayers!! Good wishes!!!
