@Thehistoryofus: @T-Mom: @mrs. wagon: @prettylizy: Thanks, ladies. I finally called the nurse again and she's going to call me to let me know when they call in my prescription. Geez...took all day. I've been pumping/nursing every two hours and it feels better but still tender to the touch. Wow, had no idea how terrible this feels! Both boys are down for naps right now so I'm going to pump again and take a nap myself.

@mrs. wagon: This always really scared me too, that and the diarrhea for the LO that they sometimes get with antibiotics. I heard you can give the baby some probiotics which might help re-populate the good bacteria. But I never ended up having to try that.

oh btw, with antibiotics you always run the risk of getting thrush :( I didn't though, and neither did LMW.

oh no!!!! keep nursing, and nurse and/or pump every 2 hours at the longest. before you nurse or pump, apply a hot compress and massage. It's gonna KILL but you gotta empty the breast for sure. And yes, ok to nurse through it. If it progresses to full-blown mastitis you will be down and out for several days :( definitely sounds like the beginnings of it though. They say you can sometimes recover from it without antibiotics, but mine came on in less than 12 hours and went straight to I'm Gonna Die symptoms. I got the antibiotics that night (the NP told me to have someone leave to pick up the prescription WHILE I was still talking to her, because the pharmacy was gonna close soon) and within 24 hours I was feeling like I was gonna live again. Wasn't feeling well enough to walk around again for at least a few days.

Good luck!!!! Heat, massage, nurse/pump!! You need your rest but wake up every 2 hours to do so...

I feel terrible for you. Yes, they will probably prescribe you antibiotics. That will definitely help you. I have gotten mastitis several times. 2x, I took antibiotics and it kicked in by the next day. 2 other times, I stayed home from work with the kids at day care, and I drank a TON of water and slept it off, and it went away in 2 days. If you are watching the kids too, that might be difficult for you since the most important thing for mastitis is to keep emptying and to rest. Good luck!!!

I guess I didn't do enough hot compress and feeding/pumping yesterday b/c I woke up with chills (sooo cold) and fever between 100.2 - 102.2 and an achy body. I called my OB's office and they told me to do what I already know and said would call me back but I haven't heard anything yet. :( So now I'm either going to nurse or pump every two hours or whenever I feel my left breast feeling sore again. I think it's spread b/c it's on the entire left side now. Do they normally prescribe antibiotics to help with the infection? Just wondering. If I don't hear back from my OB (a little disappointed the nurses haven't called me back yet) I'm seeing my Family Prac. doctor tomorrow so I'll just talk to her. In the mean time I'm taking ibuprofen. To add to things, I had dental surgery to do a crown lengthening yesterday but I know it has nothing to do with it b/c my left breast is so tender and red.

I stay home with my boys and my oldest doesn't have preschool today so I pretty much just let him play with the iPad ALL morning... something I don't normally let him do for that long. I just had to rest while my LO is napping. I feel a little better but still feel like crap. Sucks... I called my husband to ask him to come home early but the earliest is like 4pm. Thank goodness he's home tomorrow.

Oh, and it's okay to nurse through this, right?
